PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Clear an area for planting.
  • Conduct soil preparation for Rooibos seedlings.
  • Plant and establish Rooibos seedlings.
  • Utilize knowledge of planting seedlings in a variety of crop farming.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the soil preparation practices that are necessary for the transplanting of Rooibos seedlings. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: scrub removal, grading, ploughing, tilling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The removal of scrub from the area to be planted is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for grading a new plantation are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process of grading the area to be planted is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for deep ploughing of the planting rows are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The methods of conducting deep ploughing are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The procedures for the tilling of the top soil are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Remove Rooibos seedlings from the nursery and transport these to the prepared area. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: prior watering, undercut the roots, seedling removal procedures, plant handling procedures, storage and transporting procedures, minimise seedling exposure.

    The reasons for ensuring that the seedlings have been well watered prior to their removal are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The method of undercutting the roots of the seedlings is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Seedlings are removed using industry procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The necessity of minimizing the exposure of the seedlings is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Seedlings are handled according to accepted industry procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The methods of packing and storage of the seedlings for transporting to the plantation are demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the Rooibos planting practices. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: indicate row and plant spacing, excavate planting holes, place seedlings, backfill and firm soil around seedling, ensure soil / stem level is maintained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons why the correct row spacing must be kept to, is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The plant spacing, as per the company's SOPs are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A plant hole is excavated according to industry specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Seedlings are placed in the hole. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The necessity to retain the original soil to stem level is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The soil around the plant is backfilled and firmed according to accepted procedures.

    Provide initial care to the young Rooibos plants.
