PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the field of Safety in Society who will demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills in caring and conditioning newborn puppies until the ages of 18 months.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the care processes for puppies.
  • Utilize the bitch during conditioning process of puppies.
  • Evaluate performance of the dog in order to determine future use.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate understanding of the care processes for puppies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The development calendar of the dog is explained in order to monitor the progress of a service dog. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Abnormalities in the physical appearance of the puppies are evaluated in order to determine whether dog is suitable for use as a service dog. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Nutritional programs and physical well being of the puppies are explained in order to design individual programs for each puppy. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Utilise the bitch during conditioning process of puppies. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Conditioning process also includes the socialisation process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The content of the conditioning program is evaluated to ensure design of development programmes for trainable puppies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of the bitch in puppy conditioning programs is evaluated in terms of its influence on the behaviour of puppies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The socialization needs of the puppies are evaluated to determine areas of training needed for specific puppies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The time and methods for the separation of the mother from the puppies is evaluated in order to determine when the separation must occur. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Evaluate performance of the dog in order to determine future use. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Dogs in this specific outcome refer to puppies up to the age of 18 months. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Dogs ages are mapped against aptitude tests in order to comply with the requirements of the test. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Required age aptitude tests may include but is not limited to:
  • 8, 12, 16 and 24 weeks
  • 10, 14 and 18 months
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Requirements of aptitude tests are evaluated in order to ascertain which programmes would be suitable for which dog. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dog's character is assessed by using an aptitude test. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems encountered during the administering of an aptitude test are evaluated in order to inform corrective actions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Problems refer to the actions by the handler, actions by the dog and environmental factors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Problems are resolved as and when they occur during the administering of the prescribed test.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
