This Unit Standard requires learners to be able to determine a fan characteristic curve and actual operating point and take appropriate action.

    The location where fan testing is to be conducted is examined and hazards and risks pertaining to health and safety are dealt with according to specified requirements.

    The importance of the selection of the location, the examination thereof and dealing with hazards and risks are explained in terms of the possible consequences to health and safety.

    The examination of the measuring equipment to be used is completed and defects found are dealt with according to specified requirements.

    Air velocity is determined and recorded for each setting of the regulating device according to specified requirements.

    The importance of determining the air velocity as prescribed is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety.

    The volume flow rate is calculated and recorded for each required point on the fan characteristic curve according to specified requirements.

    The need to calculate and record the information is explained in terms of specified requirements.

    The fan differential pressure is measured and recorded for each setting of the regulating device, according to specified requirements.

    The ventilation system resistance is calculated and actual operating point determined in accordance with specified requirements.

    The fan electrical input data are obtained and recorded for each setting of the regulating device, according to specified requirements.

    The psychrometric properties and fan speed are measured and recorded according to specified requirements.

    The fan curves are drawn according to specified requirements and compared with manufacturer's performance data.
