NB: All the Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria are assessed in accordance with specified requirements and - where applicable - consequences to health and safety.

This unit standard applies to primary, secondary and tertiary heat exchangers, and includes, but is not limited to, bulk air coolers, condenser cooling towers, evaporative spot coolers.

Specified requirements include site-specific requirements and are contained in one or more of the following documents:
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA).
  • Mandatory Codes of Practice.
  • SANS documents.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Risk Management Programme.
  • Managerial Instructions.
  • Standard Task Procedures.
  • Company Standards.
  • Health Management Programme.
  • List of Recorded OH&S Risks.
  • Working Guides.
  • Equipment and Materials Specifications.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Describe the principles of and operation of a heat exchanger.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The basic principles of operation of heat exchangers are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The importance of cooling the working environment is explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Basic units of measurement are defined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The types of heat exchangers and components are given.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    Thermal conditions are named.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Plan to assess the performance of a heat exchanger.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Personal protective equipment is checked for availability, suitability, functionality and use.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The measuring instruments are examined and their calibration confirmed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Permission to enter the working place is obtained and the consequences of entering a workplace without obtaining permission are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The site where the assessment is to take place is examined for hazards and risks and any present are dealt with accordingly.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The previous report for the heat exchanger, where available, is examined and findings and recommendations are noted.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Preparatory work is performed in a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids conflict.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Assess a heat exchanger and recommend appropriate remedial action.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The physical inspection of the heat exchanger and its components is conducted in accordance with specified requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The measurement of performance parameters and recording of data is consistent with specified requirements. The importance of measuring and recording of data is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The assessment of the heat exchanger, pertaining to it's operating duty, is in accordance with specified requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Sub-standard conditions are noted and dealt with according to specified requirements. The importance of compliance with standards is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
