PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be working within a golf club environment, specialising in golf retailing, added services to golf clubs, golf coaching, sports science and golf event management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. This standard will also add value to individuals who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards an accomplished sports management and sports administration specialist.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

    Demonstrate an understanding of the history of golf, its ethos and administration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The history of golf is described using anecdotes from the past to illustrate changes to and developments in the game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Golf history includes, but is not limited to, the origins of golf, early development of golf in Scotland and Europe, and the Unites States of America, development of golf in modern times.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The early history of golf administration is understood and contrasted with golf administration at the present time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A comparison is made of the history of golf administration in the USA, South Africa and other parts of the world highlighting similarities and differences and their effect on the game in each country. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    South African golf history includes, but is not limited to, the origins of golf in South Africa, early Golf Clubs in South Africa, history of golf administration in South Africa and history of past players and early golf tournaments in South Africa.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The history of golf equipment and its influence on the development of golf is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The history of the development of the rules of golf is explained with an explanation of how the changes to the rules have affected the game both positively and negatively.

    Display knowledge the history of noteworthy tournaments of the past and present. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The history of noteworthy tournaments includes, but is not limited to, their foundation and history, noteworthy players past and present, noteworthy holes and their play, landmarks, trophies and organisation.

    Explanations are given of the history of major golf tournaments focussing on their origins, major developments and lore. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Major golf tournaments include but are not limited to the British Open, the Masters, the Open Championships, the American Open, the American PGA tournament.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The history of the PGA Tour is described and discussed highlighting its origins, major developments and lore. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The PGA tour includes but is not limited to the USA tour, the European tour and the South African tour.

    The history of the Ryder Cup is given focussing on its origins, major developments and lore.

    Great players of the early years (before 1st world war), their notable achievements and contributions to golfing are described in relation to their tournament wins, prize money earned and influence on the game.

    Great players of the middle years (1920's - 1930's), their notable achievements and contributions to golfing are described in relation to their tournament wins, prize money earned and influence on the game.

    Great modern players, their notable achievements and contributions to golfing are described in relation to their tournament wins, prize money earned and influence on the game.
