PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be working within a golf club environment, specialising in golf retailing, added services to golf clubs, golf coaching, sports science and golf event management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. This standard will also add value to individuals who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards an accomplished sports management and sports administration specialist.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and demonstrating an understanding of the basic concepts in sport psychology.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of individuality in golfers.
  • Analysing and interpreting the relationship between stress anxiety and arousal on physical and mental functioning.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the importance of mental skills in golf performance.
  • Applying a framework for mental skill teaching in golf.

    The concept of natural abilities or 'talent' are explored in relation to the skills of golfers at various levels of development.

    The skills acquisition phases are explored in relation to golfers at varying levels of development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Various psychomotor abilities are explorer in relationship to golfers of varying levels of development. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Psychomotor abilities include, but are not limited to motor abilities (muscle function, balance, and co-ordination, and differential relaxation) and perceptual ability (visual, kinaesthetic, tactile, auditory).

    The training of psychomotor ability is explored in relation to performance increase and methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Behavioural changes applicable to motor learning in golfers in various stages of development are examined and applied.

    Feedback in relation to golfers in various stages of development is explored and understood.

    Motor learning metrics are examined and applied to golfers in various stages of development.

    The concepts of stress, anxiety and arousal are explored and related to sports performance.

    Theories relating to stress and performance are explored and applied to in a golfing context.

    Theories relating to stress, anxiety and arousal include, but are not limited to 'drive theory' and the 'inverted U hypothesis'.

    Negative symptoms of stress are listed and explained in relation to their effect on golfing performance.

    Symptoms of physical arousal resulting from inappropriate levels of psychological anxiety are listed and explained in relation to their effect on golfing performance.

    Typical stress management strategies are evaluated and utilised.

    Key golfing success factors include, but are not limited to, basic swing technique, specialist shot making, course management, physical conditioning, lifestyle management, psychological preparation and assessment.

    Assessment techniques are applied to key golfing success factors in relationship to golf development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The understanding of the importance of the application of mental skills as a major contributor to the holistic approach for golfing performance is demonstrated.

    Apply a framework for mental skill teaching in golf.

    The education/awareness stage in teaching mental skills is described and applied a golfing environment.

    The assessment/profiling stage and methods in teaching mental skills are described and applied a golfing environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Assessment and profiling methods include, but are not limited to questionnaires, observation, interviews, triangulation approach, and golf specific mental questionnaires.

    The 'learn psychological techniques' stage in teaching mental skills is described and applied a golfing teaching environment.
