PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be working within a golf club environment, specialising in golf retailing, added services to golf clubs, golf coaching, sports science and golf event management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. This standard will also add value to individuals who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards an accomplished sports management and sports administration specialist.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understating of the history of golf rules and the structure and layout of the rules of golf.
  • Interpreting, giving advice on, and explaining the rules relating to the play and administration of golf.
  • Interpreting, giving advice on, and explaining the rules of golf relating to local rules and competition conditions.
  • Interpreting, giving advice on, and explaining the rules of golf relating to club and ball design.
  • Interpreting, giving advice on, and explaining the rules of golf relating amateur status.

    Demonstrate an understating of the history of golf rules and the structure and layout of the rules of golf.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The history of the rules of golf is briefly outlined and described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The format of the rules book of the rules of golf is understood and described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of the rule book is demonstrated in making decisions as to procedure and penalties in various circumstances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Use of the rule book includes, but is not limited to making decisions relating to, identifying the form of play, who is involved, where the incident occurred, playing out of turn, ball unfit for play, carrying 15 clubs or more, out of bounds, lost ball, stroke, obstruction and equipment.

    Teaching resources are described.

    Rules relating to the game of golf are explained and applied.

    Rules relating to the game of golf include rules relating to game play, match play, stoke play, other forms of play and the penalties for breaches of game rules.

    Rules relating to the golf clubs and balls are explained and applied. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Rules relating to golfing equipment include rules relating to the use of golf clubs, golf balls, and the penalties for breaches of equipment rules.

    Rules relating to player responsibilities in golf are explained and applied.

    Rules relating to player responsibility include rules player conduct, practice, advise indicating line of play, information as to stokes taken, and penalties for breaches of player responsibility rules.

    Temporary conditions include, but are not limited to, mud and water and course protection and temporary condition rules include, but are not limited to, lifting and cleaning balls, preferred lies and winter rules.

    Typical local rules relating to obstructions are discussed with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Obstructions include, but are not limited to, stones, bunkers, roads, immovable obstructions, protecting young trees, and obstruction rules include but are not limited to dropping and relieve zones.

    Typical matters established by the committee as competition conditions are described with examples.

    Conditions include, but are not limited to, specification of conforming balls, starting times, caddie use, pace of play, suspensions of play due to dangerous conditions, practice, advice, new holes, transport, anti-doping, tie decisions, drawing in match play, and penalties for breaching conditions.
