PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard intended for learners who work in aviation insurance. It is useful for Intermediaries, Underwriters, Claims Assessors, Loss Adjusters, Attorneys and people in the aviation industry who handle in-house insurance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing the risk in an aviation insurance proposal.
  • Gathering information to present the risk.
  • Proposing a solution to manage an aviation risk.
  • Negotiating terms and conditions.
  • Processing a claim. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Factors that could affect the risk in an aircraft policy include, but are not limited to, geopolitical, climatic, people related, experience, type, age and maintenance of the aircraft.
  • Factors that could affect the risk in a premises liability policy include, but are not limited to, type of aircraft worked on, number of aircraft in hangers at any one time, experience of licensed engineer, workshop turnover and experience with different types of aircraft.
  • Other risks include, but are not limited to, war, breach of warranty, engine breakdown and personal accident.
  • Documents to present the risk relate to, but are not limited to parties, client, insurer and reinsurer.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Analyse the risk in an aviation insurance proposal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The risks in an aircraft policy are analysed and an indication is given of factors that affect the severity of each risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The risks in a premises liability policy are analysed and an indication is given of factors that affect the severity of each risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The risks in three other types of aviation policy are analysed and an indication is given of factors that affect the severity of each risk. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Gather information to present the risk.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A basic aviation policy is analysed to determine the cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The information in a specific proposal is analysed to determine the quantum and severity of the risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Additional information required to make an assessment decision is identified and sourced for a specific policy. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Propose a solution to manage an aviation risk.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The basic cover in an aviation policy is compared to the available information about the risk and appropriate restrictions and extensions are applied to create an insurable risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Documents are prepared to present the risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An appropriate insurance market is selected for a specific risk. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Negotiate terms and conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A proposal is presented to an insurer or reinsurer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Knowledge of the current market is applied to determine possible terms and conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Terms and conditions from two insurers or reinsurers are compared to determine the best quote in terms of price and scope. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The difference between an acceptable and unacceptable market is explained and an indication is given of how the acceptability of the market will affect negotiations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A counter proposal is analysed to ensure that the cover is acceptable. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Process a claim.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process for appointing a loss adjuster is explained with reference to industry best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reports of a loss adjuster are interpreted and a decision is made as to whether or not to accept liability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons why a claim may be repudiated are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences if time bars are not strictly adhered to are explained from the point of view of the client, the intermediary and the insurer.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
