PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard intended for learners in Short Term insurance and learners in the travel industry who receive commission on travel insurance policies. It will be useful for Underwriting Agents, Assistance Companies, Banks, Call/Service Centres, Intermediaries, learners in Medical Schemes, Healthcare Benefits Administrators, Tour Operators, Airline Personnel and Foreign Exchange Outlets.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the risks associated with travel.
  • Explaining the role players in a travel insurance contract.
  • Analysing a travel policy wording.
  • Explaining the procedure in the event of a claim.

    The risks covered under medical expenses are identified with reference to indemnity.

    Risks classified as personal accidents are explained with reference to cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Risks relating to cancellations and curtailment are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Baggage and personal effect related risks are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    General risks associated with travel overseas are identified with reference to the potential quantum of a claim.

    Risks relating to transport and repatriation are explained with examples.

    Suppliers who are party to a travel contract are identified for a specific contract and an indication is given of the role of each.

    A policy wording is analysed to determine terms and conditions.

    A policy wording and policy schedule are analysed to determine cover.

    Exclusions and endorsements in a policy are identified and an indication is given of why certain aspects are excluded or endorsed under a specific policy.

    A credit card product is compared to a specific travel insurance product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Medical scheme cover is compared to medical cover under travel insurance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The legal requirements associated with travel insurance are explained and an indication is given of the consequences of non-compliance.

    Explain the procedure in the event of a claim.

    Events that could result in a claim are identified and classified according to the risk.

    The process to be followed in the event of a claim is explained for three different types of risk.

    The limitations on a claim are analysed to validate a claim. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The complaints procedure for a specific organisation is outlined and an indication is given of avenues that are available for redress in cases where a policy holder is dissatisfied with the outcome of a claim.
