PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are assessed as competent against this Unit Standard will be able to effectively and safely maintain un-surfaced road shoulders under supervision.

Competence in this Unit Standard will enable learners:
  • To identify and protective measures during the maintenance activity.
  • To explain the characteristics of effective road shoulders.
  • Explain and apply practical planning techniques required for maintenance.
  • The impact of planning on productivity during the maintenance activity.
  • The techniques of repairing gravel shoulders.

The Unit Standard contributes to the overall competence required of the construction and maintenance road worker.

Its contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning experience. This Unit Standard can therefore enhance the employability and career prospects of learners. Previously disadvantaged individuals can also progress to start their own maintenance firms specialising in the maintenance of roads.
