A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Apply the correct plant handling techniques
  • Identify the shelf life of various varieties
  • Conduct stock rotation in a commercial florist establishment

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receiving floristry plant material. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: unpacking, verify quantity, quality, order/invoice/delivery note, returns and unsuitable, packaging disposal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct method of handling florist material is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The verification of the quantity of floristry material as reflected on the order and the invoice/delivery note is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The factors that contribute to the rejection/non acceptance of unsuitable material are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods for the disposal of packaging material are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The factors that determine the short shelf-life of various materials are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The sequence in which the usage of floristry material for an arrangement should follow, is demonstrated.

    The usage of post-peak plants is explained.

    The factors that determine the decision for the usage or disposal of post peak material are described.

    Recognize the importance of the shelf-life of various plant materials.

    The factors that determine the use of various varieties of cut flowers are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The factors that determine the selection of cut foliage are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The factors that determine the selection of flowering plants are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of dried flowers in floral arrangements is described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate a knowledge of stock level controlling.

    The range includes but is not limited to: sales trends, themes, peak periods, seasons, minimum/maximum, availability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of sales trends in the gauging of stock levels is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The factors that determine the stock levels that specific themes require, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role that peak periods play in the determination of stock levels is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The factors that influence the necessary stock holding for specific seasons are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The factors that determine the minimum and maximum stock levels are described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Demonstrate a knowledge of the correct procedures for the handling and delivery of floral products. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: handling, packaging, transport, heat protection, container water levels, routing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of the correct handling of floral products is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The various methods of packaging floral products for in-transit protection are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role that the transporting period plays in the condition of floral products is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact that heat protection plays in the condition of floral products is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The factors that determine the water levels of containers whilst in-transit are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The importance that efficient transport routing has on the condition of floral products is described. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.

    The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge be assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in its own right, through oral and practical evidence. It cannot be assessed by observation only.

    The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, then they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be assessed as competent.

    Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

    Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

    Embedded knowledge is reflected within the assessment criteria of each specific outcome and must be assessed in its own right, through oral and written evidence. Observation cannot be the only assessment.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors must:
  • Be accredited as an assessor by the relevant ETQA
  • Hold an assessor certificate according to the current requirements
  • Have experience or in depth knowledge of the horticultural industry, specifically as it relates to ornamental aspects
