In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Recognise, create and describe various patterns and functional relationships
  • Investigate observed patterns and analyse mathematical situations and structures
  • Investigate problems in mathematical and real-life situations
  • Determine, analyse and interpret equivalence of different descriptions of the same relationships

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are competent in reading and writing, working with numbers, operations with numbers and relationships between numbers, understanding of patterns, functions and algebra and working with shape, space and measurement at ABET level 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Recognise, create and describe various patterns and functional relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A variety of numeric and geometric patterns are investigated and analysed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Patterns not limited to sequences involving constant difference or ratio are created.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
An initial understanding of rate of change is developed e.g. the connection between the slope of a line and constant rate of change.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Generalisations are identified and expressed and their validity is verified and explained correctly.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Investigate observed patterns and analyse mathematical situations and structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Relationships between input and output variables are recognised in terms of numerical, graphical, verbal and symbolic representations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Conversions between various representations are performed flexibly.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Graphs drawn of observed patterns are analysed in terms of their characteristics.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Domain and range; intercepts with the axes; turning points, minima, maxima; shape and symmetry; intervals on which the function increases /decreases; discrete and continuous.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Investigate and solve problems in mathematical and real-life situations.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Problems should include contexts that relate to human rights, social, economic, cultural, health and environmental issues.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Information derived from tables and graphs is used to answer relevant questions related to the given data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Appropriate axes are used to represent information with graphs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Situations are described by interpreting graphs of the situations in terms of trends and features.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Contextualised problems are modelled and solved using various representations such as graphs and tables to understand the purpose and utility of each.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Determine, analyse and interpret equivalence of different descriptions of the same relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Equivalent expressions for algebraic expressions are generated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    Algebraic processes are used correctly.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Like and unlike terms are classified; like terms are collected; polynomial expressions are multiplied or divide by a monomial; algebraic expressions are factorised (common factor; difference of squares).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The laws of exponents is developed are understood and explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Linear equations and inequalities are solved by trial and improvement as well as algebraic processes.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
