PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Conduct pre-flight operations
  • Conduct safety demonstrations and briefings
  • Provide in-flight services
  • Provide post-flight services
  • Maintain aeroplane hygiene

    This unit standard contains competencies that will equip learners with the appropriate knowledge and skills for providing in-flight passenger care on board aeroplanes in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. These competencies furthermore provide the building blocks that will lead learners towards the achievement of the Flight Attendant Licence as required by the South African Civil Aviation Authority thereby contributing towards the full development and functionality of learners within an aviation support operations environment.

    The benefit to society and enterprise lies in a professional community of flight attendants who are able to provide a safe, secure and efficient travel experience to air transportation users.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Self-readiness for flight is confirmed in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Readiness for flight includes but is not limited to:
  • Personal grooming, health and hygiene, relevant flight and travel documentation, read safety notices and attend crew briefings.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cabin is prepared for the boarding of passengers in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cabin preparation includes but is not limited to:
  • Emergency equipment checked, cabin security assessed, verification of passenger manifests, cabin and galley readiness and functionality of equipment, bar and catering stock is checked for sufficiency.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Emergency and service equipment defects are logged and cabin status reported in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Boarding position is assumed by Flight Attendant in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Passengers are boarded on the aeroplane in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Passenger boarding includes but is not limited to:
  • The checking of passenger boarding documentation and the monitoring of passenger boarding onto the aeroplane.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Flight crew is informed of special attention passengers boarded on the flight in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

    Special attention passengers include but are not limited to:
  • Persons with disabilities, under security supervision, who appear to be under the influence of a narcotic or intoxicating substance or who require medical attention.

    Aeroplane doors and exits are prepared, closed and cross-checked for departure in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

  • Stowage of baggage, seating and safety belts, use of electronic devices, location of doors and exits, emergency exit lighting, safety features card, supplemental oxygen, location of flotation devices, Non-Smoking policy.

    Cabin is prepared and sterile cabin is confirmed in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sterile cabin includes but is not limited to:
  • The correct stowage of baggage and loose articles, electronic equipment switched off, seatbelt signs adhered to, armrests down and tray tables stowed.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    In-flight information is communicated to passengers in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In-flight information includes but is not limited to:
  • Services and product information, Customs and Immigration procedures.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Pre-landing briefings are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

    Pre-landing briefing includes but is not limited to:
  • The correct stowage of baggage, electronic equipment switched off, seatbelts signs adhered to, armrests down and tray tables stowed, delayed arrivals.

    Post landing briefings are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

    Post landing briefings include but are not limited to:
  • Safety and security briefings, relevant information with regard to the destination.

    Passenger needs are identified, attended to and monitored throughout the flight in accordance with operational procedures.

  • Pillow, Blankets, Children's Entertainment Pack, Headphones, Reading Material and general passenger well being.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Functionality of passenger service facilities is monitored and maintained in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Functional service facilities include but are not limited to:
  • Reading light, call button, in-flight entertainment, toilets.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Catering equipment is prepared for food and bar service delivery in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Food and beverage service is provided in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The cabin is stripped in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Sterile cabin is prepared for landing in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Passengers are disembarked from the aeroplane in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

    Areas of risk on board aeroplanes are identified and the effect of the aeroplane environment on in-flight health conditions is described in the context of regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

  • Cabin, Galley, Toilets.
    The effect of the aeroplane environment on in-flight health conditions includes but is not limited to:
  • The configuration of the aeroplane, the number of flight crew members on board.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sources of unhygienic conditions on board the aeroplane are identified and the associated hazards described in the context of regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sources of unhygienic conditions include but are not limited to:
  • Blocked drains, dirty ovens due to spillage, contaminated equipment (trolleys, coffee and teapots), oxygen/air flow outlets, flying into high risk areas.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The spread of unhygienic conditions on board the aeroplane are controlled in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Controlling the spread of unhygienic conditions on board the aeroplane includes but is not limited to:
  • Disinfectant sprays are used for general cleanliness and areas of risk on board the aeroplane are maintained.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Unhygienic conditions on board the aeroplane are reported in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

    Post flight security checks and procedures are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

    Security checks and procedures include but are not limited to:
  • Suspicious items or devices, lost property, stowaways, packing away of supplementary passenger safety equipment like belly loops, extension seat belts, wheel chairs.

    Post flight debriefings are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements and operational procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
