PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and selecting small plant and equipment, preparing small plant and equipment for use, utilising small plant and equipment as well as maintaining small plant and equipment.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • ABET Level 3 English literacy and numeracy. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Small plant and equipment relative to a construction site, include but is not limited to:
  • Manually measured and loaded concrete mixers.
  • Concrete vibratory units.
  • Water and sludge pumps.
  • Plate vibratory compactors.
  • Pedestrian vibratory rollers.

    Productivity relates to the time taken to complete the task and that normal wear and tear on the equipment is not exceeded.

    Plant and equipment are identified in terms of the work function they were designed to perform.

    Plant and equipment are selected according to site conditions and the task to be performed.

    Additional implements that could be used to perform the same task are identified in terms of workplace safety requirements.

    Plant and equipment is loaded, offloaded and transported to the place of work without the risk of injury to personnel or damage to the equipment.

    Plant and equipment is set up in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Plant and equipment maintenance and field servicing is carried out in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Pre-start procedures are conducted in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Attachments and accessories are checked to confirm safe working order in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Personal protective equipment is selected according to the work functions to be performed.

    Consequences of not correctly wearing personal protective equipment are explained in terms of potential injury to self and others.
