In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are involved in preparing production equipment within a continuous steel tube and pipe production process require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.

Qualifying learners can prepare and ready the equipment for producing steel tube and pipe and reflect on the equipment preparation process. They will understand the importance of effective process set up and how this is achieved. This will include setting up production equipment, setting operational parameters, testing operational functioning, identifying non-conformances and taking corrective action.

The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in Steel Tube and Pipe Manufacturing (Seamless Hot-Finished, Welded or Cold-Formed) (NQF level 3) and related qualifications.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent
  • The unit standard "Select and load material for input"

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • The ranges, as indicated under the specific outcomes, determine the scope and level of this unit standard
  • The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision
  • Work is generally, but not exclusively, carried out in a team environment
  • Process setup meets with operational requirements
  • First-off product conforms to product specifications
  • Process setup and first-off production is achieved within given time constraints
  • Accurate production data is recorded and process documentation is timeously processed
  • Affected parties are aware of production requirements
  • Non-conformances are timeously identified and appropriate corrective action is taken
  • Applicable procedures are followed and understood
  • Principles, concepts and issues are discussed. These principles, concepts and issues relate to:
  • Importance of timeously identifying and rectifying defects/non-conformances
  • Effects of poor process set up on the overall production process
  • Inadequate planning, poor practices in process preparation
