PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will provide persons with knowledge on the evolution of war and warfare since Antiquity with the main focus in strategic-, operational art and tactics during the 19th and 20th Century.

Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of history.
  • Analyse and explain the evolution of warfare since Antiquity.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of different armed forces in South Africa until 1994.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of History. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of history is explained so that persons can understand that the discipline develops insight in order to solve contemporary problems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lessons from the evolution of war are explained in terms of the contribution to the development of theory and or doctrine. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse and explain the evolution of warfare since Antiquity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The social/economic as well as the technological improvements are analysed in such a way to indicate the changes in the nature of warfare in the ancient world. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of the Iron Age on the evolution of societies is explained in terms of the transformation of weapons systems, logistics and tactics in that era. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The transformation of land warfare from the Roman system till the 15th Century is described to indicate the decline of the importance of infantry on the battlefield and the gaining importance of cavalry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The evolution of naval warfare till the 16th Century is described in terms of the rise of Europe as the dominant power in world politics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The impact of the rise of the nation state and the development of gunpowder weapons on the evolution of warfare are explained in terms of the transformation to total war. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The impact of the industrial revolution is analysed and explained in terms of the impact of the new command and control and weapons systems in armed forces of the major powers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The nature of the wars is analysed within the context of the evolution of warfare from 1850 - 1945. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of different armed forces in South Africa until 1994. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The evolution of warfare in Southern Africa is analysed in terms of the different conflicts and wars in the period 1588-1906. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A campaign is analysed by referring to the different levels of war, and the application of operational art. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of military power in the grand strategy of the ANC is analysed in terms of the unique nature of the revolutionary struggle in South Africa. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including RPL) may apply to be assessed by a relevant provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • Subject matter experience at or above the level of this unit standard. The applicant must have knowledge of the levels of war.
  • The assessor needs to be competent in the unit standard "Conduct Standard Based Assessment" NQF level 5 and "Design and Develop Assessment Criteria".

    The subject matter experience of the assessor can be established by recognition of prior learning.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
