PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable Plumbers to install, maintain, and repair hot and cold-water plumbing systems. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. The installation, repair and maintenance of hot and cold water systems are according to the following qualitative specifications:
  • SABS 0254: 2000 The Installation, maintenance and repair of fixed electric storage water heating systems
  • SABS 0252: 1994 Water supply and drainage for Buildings:
  • Part 1: Water Supply installations for Buildings, and
  • Part 2: Drainage Installations for Buildings

    2. Pipes include: galvanised mild steel (GMS), unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC), high density polyethylene (HDPE), copper, polypropylene,

    3. Cold water pipe systems are pressure pipes, include the installation of fire protection sprayers, and fire hose reels.

    4. Cold water supply systems include direct, indirect and balanced systems for domestic supply.

    5. Joining of pipes includes the cutting and threading of galvanised pipes, the joining of similar pipes such as copper, PVC, and the joining of dissimilar pipe types.

    6. Installation of pipes includes both above and below ground, lagging, and the provision of hose reels.

    7. Fittings include: cocks, valves, taps, full way valves, house water stations, thermostatic valves, flushing valves, control valves, pressure reducing valves, mixers, water meters, expansion leaf valves, etc.

    8. Types of geysers include: combination geysers, push through type, and high pressure geysers.

    9. Installation of geysers includes the drip tray, valves, overflow, thermostats, etc.

    10. Water mains installation includes anchor and thrust blocks.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Plumbers. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification. 

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE

    1. The purpose and use of the different types of geysers.
    2. The purpose and use of the different types of pipes and pipe materials, including consumables used.
    3. Types of valves and fittings as listed and their purpose.
    4. The different methods used in joining similar and dissimilar pipe types.
    5. The different regulations and purpose pertaining to the preservation of water quality, prevention of backflow, and the disinfecting of domestic installations, including the implications of potable water contamination.
    6. The health implications of working on water supply mains.
    7. The regulations pertaining to cold water - Water Service Act, Codes of Practice and Standards pertaining to Plumbing, including SABS 0252 Part 1 and 2, and SABS 0254.
    8. Installation of pipes includes bracketing and support of pipes within specified tolerances.
