PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to undertake the complete exhibition design process, from initial conception of ideas to the final realisation of the design. This standard is focused on physical exhibition design. The unit standard contributes to the learning of those who want to develop a career path in the Art, Craft and Design sector, and contributes to greater levels of production and quality in this industry.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Interpret a brief or client specification.
  • Conduct and evaluate research for the design process.
  • Generate and assess the ideas
  • Develop and document the design
  • Communicate design ideas and make amendments
  • Liaise with others to implement exhibition

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication, NQF Level 4.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The following statements provide a general guide to the scope and complexity of the competence expected of the learner:
  • Exhibition requirements may include displays, interactive elements, furniture and furnishings, props, backdrops, special effects, murals and full-scale environments.
  • Appropriate stakeholders may include other designers, curators, conservator, construction specialists or other specialists.
  • Relevant factors which determine and affect the design may include overall exhibition concept exhibition duration, resources, space / venue specifications or restrictions, available technologies, timelines, regulations or needs of other involved in the exhibition.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Interpret the brief or client specification.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The brief or client specifications is analysed to determine overall exhibition concepts, accurately.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Preliminary concepts meetings with relevant stakeholders are held in to discuss exhibition requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Relevant factors are identified, which may determine and affect the design,

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The role of the designer is discussed in the overall exhibition development and agreed upon.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

The impacts and potential of new and emerging technologies are considered which may inform the design

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Materials are collected, collated and adapted which aid in developing initial design concepts

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Generate and assess ideas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A range of ideas is generated for the design, which respond sympathetically to the brief or client specification and provide creative solutions to technical issues.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Ideas are discussed and brainstormed with relevant stakeholders to ensure contribution of ideas to the initial concept.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Ideas for implications on cost and time, technical feasibility, and suitability to meet the brief were continuously reflected on and appraised.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Ideas demonstrate effective use of materials.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Develop and document the design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Ongoing discussions are held with relevant stakeholders so that additional or changed requirements and new ideas are considered and incorporated during the development of the design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Agreements are reached with relevant stakeholders in relation to consistent artistic interpretation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Initial concepts are evaluated, and the most appropriate approach is selected, with considerations to the budget.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Exhibition designs are developed from the initial concepts ensuring consistency with the exhibition concept.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Research findings are incorporated; ideas are technically feasible and awareness of parameters and resource constraints is shown.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Testing and experimentation with selected exhibition design are organised or undertaken, appropriately.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Records of the design are developed which are accurate and include all relevant information.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Communicate design ideas and make amendments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Draft exhibition plans and specifications are presented to relevant stakeholders in an appropriate format

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The presented design is evaluated continuously

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Modifications to the design are negotiated and agreement attained, using good communication techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The final design is agreed to and accurate and documentation to support implementation are produced which is comprehensive

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The final designs, plans and specifications are presented to all relevant stakeholders

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
