PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can apply a quality control system in the wood preservation plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Select the required samples for inspecting the quality of the grading of incoming material, of strength tests on products and of the quality of treatment of products
  • Apply the correct inspection procedures to examine these samples for the characteristics determining the relevant prescribed quality
  • Apply and record the markings in the correct positions on the final treated products to indicate the results of the inspections
  • Check operational settings on the relevant processing equipment for producing the processed poles for the required products for the wood preservation process 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace plus the principles of quality control in a wood preservation plant;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i. The quality control activity in the wood preservation plant with all the equipment, tools and instruments involved in it.
    ii. The personnel responsible for managing and performing the task of quality control in the wood preservation plant.
    iii. The quality control principles and procedures relevant to a wood preservation plant.
    iv. The raw materials handled in this specific activity.
    v. The products produced and their specifications.
    vi. The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of items.
    vii. The work procedures relevant to this activity.
    viii. The environmental management principles relevant to this activity.
    ix. The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this activity.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Select the required samples for inspecting the quality of the grading of incoming material, of strength tests on products and of the quality of treatment of products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The sampling of the relevant products at the designated stages of the process to control the relevant quality aspects, is performed as prescribed and results in a collection of samples that accurately reflects the attributes of the batch of material being inspected as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The persons responsible for planning and performing the sampling activities do these as prescribed and facilitate that the required representative samples are correctly collected as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The product of the process is a set of samples that is statistically representative of the batch from which it was drawn, that will yield results of the required accuracy to reflect the relevant properties of the products being inspected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process is performed at the prescribed work rate and ensures samples that will accurately reflect the relevant properties being inspected as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the correct inspection procedures to examine these samples for the characteristics determining the relevant prescribed quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The inspection procedures performed on the samples are carried out as prescribed and facilitate that the correct appraisal of the quality aspects being inspected as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The person responsible for controlling the process correctly carry out the inspection and produce the required results to reflect the properties inspected of the batch to within the limits of accuracy as prescribed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The product of the process is a reflection of the relevant properties of the batch inspected which comply with the prescribed requirements of accuracy as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The inspection process is performed at the prescribed work rate yielding the relevant data of the required accuracy as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply and record the markings in the correct positions on the final treated products to indicate the results of the inspections. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct markings indicating the outcome of the inspection process at the three stages of production are applied and recorded as prescribed to ensure that the correct products complying with the relevant specifications eventually reach the customer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The person responsible for controlling the inspection process correctly apply the prescribed procedures to mark and record the results of the inspections, which facilitates that the correct products of the prescribed quality complete the production process and reach the customer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The products of the process are correctly marked and recorded treated products for the market as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process of marking and recording is performed at the prescribed work rate and complies with the required quality standards for the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Check operational settings on the relevant processing equipment for producing the processed poles for the required products for the wood preservation process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The settings of the processing equipment, where relevant, are correctly checked to facilitate that the production of the required products to the prescribed specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The person responsible for controlling the checking of the settings of the relevant processing equipment perform the task as prescribed and facilitate that the production of the correct products to the prescribed specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The products of the process are correctly set processing equipment producing the required products, which comply with the prescribed specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process of checking and correcting the settings where necessary of the relevant processing machines is done at the prescribed work rate and to the required standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
