PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can manage the work force in a wood preservation plant, in the areas of material intake, seasoning, processing (preparing) and preservative treatments, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Guide, communicate with and motivate the work force in the relevant work areas
  • Apply the enterprise's disciplinary and grievance procedures in the relevant work areas
  • Keep employment records of workers in the relevant work areas
  • Train the workers in the relevant work areas (Range: material intake phase, the air seasoning yard, the processing (preparing) area or the treating area) 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The relevant workplace in the wood preservation plant with all its equipment, tools and instruments to perform the various tasks.
  • Human resource management principles.
  • The relevant labour legislation, grievance and disciplinary procedures of the enterprise and related human resource issues.
  • The enterprise's Workplace Skills Plan.
  • The personnel involved in the training activities in the relevant work areas in the wood preservation plant.
  • The training principles relevant to a wood preservation plant.
  • The work procedures relevant to this workplace.
  • The environmental management principles relevant to this workplace.
  • The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this workplace.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 4 competency.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 4, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 4 to 8.

    Guide, communicate with and motivate the work force in the relevant work areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct leadership of the workforce in the relevant work areas facilitates the successful execution of the enterprise's prescribed production programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person's correct guidance, communication with and motivation of the workforce results in the prescribed production targets being achieved producing the required products of the prescribed quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The workers in the relevant work areas operate as work teams organised and deployed as prescribed, correctly performing the required production tasks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The guidance of, communication with and motivation of the workers in the relevant work areas is of the prescribed standard and ensure that the required production targets are achieved. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the enterprise's disciplinary and grievance procedures in the relevant work areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The enterprise's disciplinary code and grievance procedures are applied as agreed upon between management and labour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person applying the disciplinary code and grievance procedures execute these measures as per the company policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The application of these measures achieves the required outcomes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    These measures are applied at the correct time and achieve the required results within the prescribed time limits as detailed in the policies and procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Keep employment records of workers in the relevant work areas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The employment records of workers in the relevant work areas are kept as required in the policies and procedures of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person correctly follows the prescriptions of keeping these records. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The employment records of the relevant workers correctly reflect the status of every worker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Keeping the employment records is done in the prescribed time and to the prescribed standards as detailed in the policies and procedures.

    Train the workers in the relevant work areas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The enterprise's training programme, as reflected in its Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) correctly addresses the training needs of the enterprise, in the relevant work areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person correctly executes this training programme in the relevant work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct training is applied to produce workers with the required skills as detailed in the WSP. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The manner in which the training is applied ensures the achievement of the prescribed results. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 4 requirements;
  • Competency in executing the work force management activity in the relevant workplace in a wood preservation plant, equivalent to NQF Level 4 requirements;
  • The NQF Level 4 learner's responsibilities regarding the safety and health stipulations, the workplace procedures and the environmental management principles relevant to lumber grading.
