This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. 

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who operate the wrapping machine to packet the 10 boxes of matches into the wrapping paper, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Start the VAT machine.
  • Process the matchboxes into match packets.
  • Maintain supply line of matchboxes to VAT machine.
  • Check quality of product.
  • Shutdown the VAT machine. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and numerical skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 4.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Either 16 or 24 movement.

    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Start the VAT machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The glue pot and the applicators are assembled and fed into the machine as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Over-wrap is collected from cardboard conversion area as per product specification on production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Glue pot is filled to ¼ of the glue applicator as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Over-wrap is loaded and fed into the VAT machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Vat feed conveyor is loaded with double rows of matchboxes from the VPO or storage cases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Machine is cycled manually to produce 4 packets which are checked for defects (Range: tear off overwrap, barcode, registration, adhesion to boxes, 9 box packet, loose folds, open flaps, excessive glue, uneven wrap, tight packet and dirty overwrap). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Machine is started up as per working instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Process the match boxes into match packets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Constant feed pressure of matchboxes from the VPO is maintained as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    10 boxes are wrapped per packet as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tracking of the over-wrap is monitored to ensure that both flaps of the VAT packet are about equal size. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Glue level in the pot is monitored and topped if low as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Glue scraper is adjusted (forward or backwards) to maintain the correct glue application on the over-wrap. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Reel guide roller is adjusted to ensure that no wobbling is created as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Paper guide plate is adjusted to ensure that the paper gripper is catching the paper. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Four completed packets are quality checked every 30 minutes as per quality requirements. (Range: tear off overwrap, barcode, registration, adhesion to boxes, 9 box packet, loose folds, open flaps, excessive glue, uneven wrap, tight packet and dirty overwrap). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Problems beyond operators' scope are referred to the Team Leader. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 10 
    Scrap packets are re-sorted immediately as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 11 
    The reel of overwrap is replaced as required with the correct products during product changes as per the production plan or replaced with a new reel when the reel is empty. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 12 
    Reel cores are stacked neatly for re-use in the future. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintain supply line of match boxes to VAT machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The VAT feed conveyor is loaded with double rows of matchboxes either from the VPO or with reclaimed product or storage cases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A constant feed pressure into the VAT machine is maintained as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reclaimed boxes are collected and fed to the VAT conveyor during machine stops. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The VAT conveyor is continuously fed with matchboxes from the storage cases in the event of the VPO stopping. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Check quality of product.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Brand of over-wrap used is checked to ensure compliance with quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Glue is checked for cleanliness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Badly printed reels of over-wrap are rejected as per quality specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Damaged boxes and boxes with protruding matches are removed before they reach the VAT machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tracking is corrected when necessary to ensure that both flaps of the VAT packet are equal in size as per quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Glue level is maintained at ¼ of the glue applicator. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Loose or open flaps, excessive glue and untidy packets are checked and corrective action is taken if non-compliance is found as per quality requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Shutdown the VAT machine.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
