PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can cut crepe paper and operate sewing machining according to workplace standards, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for production run.
  • Sew crepe.
  • Dispose of all off-cuts. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturer.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacture.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for production run. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct amount of crepe paper and cotton is available to ensure achievement of production run. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The appropriate colour for the production run must be identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The correct colour crepe paper is placed on the crepe paper feeder as determined by the production run. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The spare paper is stacked in the designated area as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Sew crepe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The crepe paper cutter blades must be sharp and lubricated as per safe work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sewing bags must be received via the conveyor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The crepe paper is cut and trimmed to quality standards as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The trimmed bag must be allowed to continue on the conveyor for further processing as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Dispose of all off-cuts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The off-cuts receptacle is correctly placed to receive off-cuts as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The off-cuts must be disposed of into the receptacle provided as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The receptacle must be emptied at the end of the production run as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work area is cleaned and ready for the next production run as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • Charcoal manufacturing principles and practical application in a charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues. 

  • UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
    Operate as an efficient unit in carrying out the productions plan/programme in the packing line.
