PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are involved in the repair and maintenance of domestic appliances, and covers replacement of motors in electrical appliances.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify and explain faulty motors in domestic electrical appliances;
  • Remove and replace motors in domestic electrical appliances;
  • Test and commission motor in domestic electrical appliance.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Typical electrical appliances fitted with motors - fan heaters, fan ovens, microwave ovens, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, de-humidifiers, vacuum cleaners, fans, washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers, waste disposal units.

    Appliances may be single phase plug-ended or fixed-wired. Permanent cabling to the switchboard is excluded.
  • Evidence of motors in four different appliances is required. One of these may be a direct current motor.
  • Current regulations and standards refer to the requirements of the above legislation, standards, and codes, applied to the context in which the term is used.
  • Industry norms refers to those practices, which competent practitioners within the industry recognise as current industry best practice.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify by inspection and test faulty motors in domestic electrical appliances according to manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Motor is run off and on load where practicable, and visible and audible defects are identified while running and at standstill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Motor is tested according to industry norms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need to replace the motor is established according to logical analysis of symptoms and test results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The viability of motor replacement is assessed taking into account cost of motor replacement compared to cost of appliance, availability of spare motor, and supervisor or customer instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Repair or replace motors in domestic electrical appliances according to manufacturers specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Faulty motor is removed without damage to other components, and conductor connections are noted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Faulty motor is repaired according to requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Irreparable motor replacement is selected according to original specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Replacement motor is fitted without damage to other components, according to manufacturer's instructions.

    Maintain motors in domestic electrical appliances according to manufacturers specifications.

    Correct testing procedures for domestic appliance motors are applied with the aid of testing and measuring equipment.

    Maintenance is carried out according to manufacture's specifications and procedures.

    Applicable tools and equipment are correctly used during maintenance.

    Reasons for applying specific maintenance procedure and selecting of a specific tools and equipment are fully explained in terms of application.

    Commission motor and domestic electrical appliance according to manufacturers specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Electrical connections and earthing of exposed metal parts are verified according to manufacturers specifications and safety standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Testing that motor and appliance operate in accordance with manufacturer specifications and operating instructions is carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Test results are documented according to company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Final testing and commissioning is carried out at point of installation according to manufacturers specification.

    Transport and handle domestic appliances according to manufacturers specifications.

    Handling of domestic appliances is conducted without subjecting the appliances to any external or internal damage.

    Appliances are secured according to given instructions.

    Including the securing or immobilising of moving parts where required.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Loading, transporting and offloading techniques used are appropriate to the appliance in terms of shape, weight, size and sensitivity.

    Including the use of sufficient people and/or loading equipment.

    Documentation for delivery or removal is handled according to company requirements.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA and according to relevant Electrical legislation.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines, the agreed ETQA procedures and according to relevant Electrical legislation.
