PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for persons working in, or planning entry into, the construction industry. A person accredited with this Unit Standard will be able to install borders for new flooring, in accordance with the industry's set standards.

This Unit Standard will contribute to the development of any learner within the construction industry by providing competence, recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this Unit Standard will aid in the social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction industry. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    Various types of borders are evaluated in terms of applicability order to install an appropriate border 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Clients are informed about options, advantages and disadvantages of relevant borders, in order to ensure the installation of an appropriate and functional border, which is in line with client's application and expectations 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Materials and equipment are prepared for the effective and efficient installation of borders 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faulty materials and tools are dealt with according to safety and industry standards, to ensure the safe, effective and efficient installation of borders 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Ventilation is adequate considering the materials used in the installation to ensure the health and safety of self and others

    Install borders of new flooring.

    Seams, joins and fills are done in accordance with industry standards

    Installation anomalies are identified and appropriate and safe plans to overcome these are made, or anomalies are reported according to job description

    Finish borders of new flooring.

    Left over materials are dealt with according to site supervisors instructions, and safely 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Borders are finished using manufacturer prescribed compounds and procedures and according to industry standards 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Borders are evaluated for aesthetics and, where required remedial action is taken according to industry standards 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Client is briefed on the maintenance of the border (especially if different to that of new flooring) in accordance with industry standards relating to maintenance, using clear communication 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Initiate clean-up and inspection of border to new floor.

    Rubble is removed and disposed of safely, according to industry standards and according to site supervisor 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Work area is cleaned to ensure an aesthetically pleasing overall flooring product 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work area is restored to initial state, showing that no damage was caused to client's property 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Supervisor is alerted to the readiness of the job for the final inspection, in a way that promotes efficiency and good communication

  • Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by a relevant ETQA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for this unit standard.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with a relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with a relevant ETQA.
