Understanding the significance of geological mapping of the mining regions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Establish the nature of the data required and how it is used in determining the suitability of different mining tools for various geological conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Understand how this data is analysed and presented.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Be able to interpret side scan sonar, pinger and other seismic records as well as footwall and sediment contour maps.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Basic understanding of geological applications and survey interpretations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Applicable task specific legal and safety requirements are understood and explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Collect geological samples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Ensure that security requirements are adhered to before collecting geological samples from the plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Identify the most suitable areas for the collection of overboard material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Ensure that samples conform to the prescribed size.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Ensure that samples are packed, labelled and dispatch in the prescribed way.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Collect samples that promise to be geologically informative e.g. Clean, un-weathered footwall and conglomerate.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
    6. Ensure that samples are representative of the mining block and where possible, taken from different areas of the mining block.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
    7. Correlate features on side scan sonar with samples collected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
    8. Correctly secure, document and dispatch samples to the geological laboratory.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9
    9. Apply operational safety rules and standard or operational procedures.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Basic understanding of geology and vessel procedure.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Report geological observations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Correlate prevailing geology with mining parameters.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Identify the different basic rock and mineral types.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Identify fossils and casts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Distinguish the different gravel horizons as they arrive on plant screens.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. When describing gravel, include volume of material, composition, shape (sphericity or roundness), colour, grain size, sorted or unsorted, texture, etc.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
    6. Become acquainted with the common terminology used by the Geologists to describe above.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
