Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to identify common raw materials used to maintain and repair machinery in the CTFL sector as well as describe methods used to identify such raw materials.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 2.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Materials include oils, grease, lubricants, chemicals (cleaning chemicals, solvents and rust removers) and cleaning solvents.
  • Specific materials used will relate to specific materials and to specific processes and sub processes across clothing, textiles, footwear and leather.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identifying common raw materials used to maintain machinery.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Types of common raw materials are identified and described in relation to their use in the maintenance process and in accordance to product specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The explanation outlines, according to industry specific raw materials, the recognition of these materials and the importance of correct choice of material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Raw material types are identified, and two examples of each are stated in relation to their suitability for usage as well as standard industry definitions and terminology.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Describing methods used to identify common raw materials.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The description establishes, according to industry specific materials, the methods of identifying the different raw materials.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The methods of identifying the various raw materials are identified and described in relation to maintenance methods applying product specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The various raw materials are compared for suitability in terms of type, grade and quantity according to standard industry definitions and terminology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The characteristics of various raw materials are explained in great detail including whether they are corrosive, flammable etc according to standard industry definitions and terminology.
