PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 3 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to clean and lubricate strip, assemble and set/tune a range of clothing machinery. Learners are also able to conduct running maintenance and to diagnose a range of clothing machinery and to utilise garment construction skills in testing machines. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQFLevel 2. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Range of machines used will include those producing the following British Standard stitch types:
  • BS 301 Two thread lockstitch.
  • BS 401 Two thread chainstitch.
  • BS 504 Three thread overlock.
  • BS 101 Single thread chainstitch.

    And any two machines from machines producing the following stitch types:
  • BS 304 Two thread lockstitch Zig Zag.
  • BS 406 Twin needle coverseam.
  • BS 512 Four thread overlock.
  • BS 514 Four thread overlock.
  • BS 516 Five thread overlock safety stitch.
  • BS 605 Three needle coverseam with top cover.

    The explanation outlines, how clothing machinery is set up after cleaning and lubrication, to meet specified requirements.

    The explanation outlines, the impact of non-conformance to cleaning and lubrication processes and procedures is explained in accordance with enterprise policies and procedures.

    Stripping, assembling and setting a range of clothing machinery.

    The mechanism or component is reassembled and or replaced according to manufacturers and/or workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The mechanism or component is adjusted or reset according to manufacturers and or workplace procedures.

    The evaluation outlines, the procedure to follow when stripping, assembling and resetting a range of clothing machinery, in accordance with specified requirements.

    The mechanism or component is assessed for replacement or repair according to manufacturers and industry specifications.

    The repaired mechanism or component is reset and/or tuned to operate according to machine specifications.
