  • To make the learner aware of the definitions and terminology applicable to air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • To create an understanding of the basic principles of heat, energy and work as applied to air conditioning and refrigeration.

    Define temperature and heat and explain the different forms of heat.

    Temperature and heat are defined and the difference illustrated.

    The difference between absolute and customary temperatures is explained.

    The three phases of matter are stated and the names for changes are listed.

    The approximate barometric pressures at various altitudes are stated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sea level, 700, 1 400 and 1 700 metres altitude.

    Basic calculations involving absolute pressures, barometric pressures, gauge pressure and vacuum are carried out.

    Define and explain the terms density, specific volume, airflow and mass flow.
