PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic understanding of the person and ministry of Jesus Christ as presented in the four Gospels in order to interpret his relevance today within the context of their own faith and their ministry within a Christian congregation.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the historical, religious, social and political background to the life of Jesus
  • Explain the person and ministry of Jesus as presented in the four Gospels
  • Apply the teaching of Jesus to situations in the Church and the world today and share this within the faith community 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the historical, religious, social and political background to the life of Jesus. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    May include, amongst others, key religious groups and ideas within the Judaism of Jesus' day, the role of Temple and Synagogue and the place of Palestine within the Roman Empire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The description includes key features of Judaism in Jesus' time using time lines, maps, diagrams or text. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The description shows the effects of being a part of the Roman Empire on the Jewish population and Jewish religion. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the person and ministry of Jesus as presented in the four Gospels. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    To include an ability to describe basic similarities and differences within the Synoptics and between the Synoptics and John. An example could be how the four gospels portray Jesus as Messiah (Matthew), Human Saviour (Mark), Lamb of God (Luke) and Son of God (John).

    The description includes the main emphases within each of the Gospels with appropriate biblical references.

    The description includes the birth, death, resurrection, teaching and ministry of Jesus with appropriate biblical references.

    The description shows a possible relationship between Jesus and Old Testament ideas and prophecy.
