    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking has been made. The application of explosives and accessories and the planning and conducting of demolition exercises reflects the ability to make responsible decisions, which directly influences the safety of personnel in and around the immediate area.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community. The establishment of trust and commitment towards team members revolves around the safety of each member. Community members in the vicinity know that their safety is always considered and respected.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively. The ability to ensure self-disciplines reflects on the safety of the members and team members. The laying of demolition charges has to be planned, organised and executed effectively.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information. The ability to recognise information that directly relates to the ability to plan, perform and execute a demolition task safe and effectively.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual and language skills in modes of oral and written persuasion. The learner is required to communicate various aspects of the demolition task to the immediate community. The learner is further required to communicate within the team while conducting a demolitions task.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and the health of others. The demonstration of adherence to codes, practises, laws, and international guidelines with the environment and health of others.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA
    Notes for assessors:

Assessors should keep in mind the following general guidelines and principles when designing and conducting assessments:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the specific outcomes of the unit standard and ensure that the assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or demonstrations are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Assessment must include practical demonstration either in the workplace or through simulation. A range of assessment methods should be used, including:
    > Direct observation - watch the learner perform specific outcomes correctly. Or produce the desired outcome.
    > Simulation of a specific task - Formative and Summative assessments of conducting demolition tasks according to desired outcomes.
    > Questioning (Verbal and written) - questions linked to outcomes of unit standard.

  • UNIT STANDARD NOTES
This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard 376361, which is "Perform minor demolition tasks", Level 5, 16 credits.

    Supplementary Information

    Definitions:

UXO: Unexploded Ordinance (blind or misfire).

Accessories: The equipment that is utilized to prepare an explosive charge/device which are not classified as ammunition or explosives.

Detonator: A device which turns some external impulse such as heat, electricity, friction or a mechanical blow into a detonation shock wave. Detonators are generally classified as percussion, stab, electric or flash.

Danger Area: The space round the point where an explosion or detonation occurs within which damage may be caused. It may be divided into two distinct zones: blast zone and fragment zone.

Explosives: Explosives are solid, liquid, or gelatinous substances or mixtures of individual substances, which have been manufactured for blasting or propulsion purposes, whether alone or mixed with one another. They are in a meta-stable state and are capable, for this reason, of undergoing a rapid chemical reaction without the participation of external reactants such as atmospheric oxygen.

High Explosives: An explosive capable of being detonated.

Initiation: The starting or first step in an explosive reaction.

Low Explosives: An explosive initiated with an open flame.
