PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this Unit Standard will be able to understand and explain labour intensive construction (LIC) documentation, implement LIC systems, implement resource management techniques for LIC projects, and provide on-job training and coaching for team members in LIC methods.

These competencies complement the required generic technical and supervisory competencies and also underpins the other core learning ones.

The Unit Standard contributes to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Supervisors. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Labour Intensive Construction is a mechanism for the provision of work and for the entry of unemployed labour into the industry It also contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The typical scope of this unit standard is:

1. Pre-planning a LIC activity includes the establishment of LIC procedures and systems, supervisory information systems, and the development of an appropriate and resourced time schedule (barchart) programme.
2. Project-specific systems are those incorporated in the project specifications, such as specific measurement and recording proformas.
