PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to plan and set out for Labour Intensive Construction (LIC) roads, earthworks layer works and drainage, understand and explain basic LIC earthmoving methods, Perform Labour intensive earthworks, layer works and drainage works, road finishing works, and road maintenance works.

The Unit Standard contributes to the development of a professional community of Construction
Supervisors. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Labour Intensive Construction is a mechanism for the provision of work and for the entry of unemployed labour into the industry It also contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The learning outcomes in this unit standard will enable a learner to supervise a labour intensive team/single activity, within one field or area of works.

1. Labour Intensive Construction activities include a broad spectrum of works involving the excavating, loading, handling, hauling, unloading, spreading, placing, mixing, levelling, compacting, erecting and screeding of various natural and manufactured construction materials.

2. Setting out for roads using LIC methods includes:

5. Maintenance includes: routine, periodic, and preventative, spot improvement, as well as unscheduled and emergency maintenance.

Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA for this unit standard or a similar unit standard at a higher NQF Level.

Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.

The relevant ETQA, or other appropriate ETQA's who have a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA, would be responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
