PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for gel nail enhancements and prepare the client for the required treatment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

  • Preparing the nail plate according to manufacturers recommendation

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare the workstation for a gel nail enhancement service according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workstation is prepared for a gel nail enhancement service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The client is received and prepared according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client's nail and skin is assessed and any abnormalities that preclude treatments are recorded on client record card. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All recommendations of further treatments as well as possible home care products are recorded. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the nail plate according to manufacturers recommendation.

    A complete set of nails should be used with no mixing of products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Prepare the cuticles and nail plate according to the manufacturers recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appropriate products are applied according to the suppliers recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The understanding of different preparation products used for the preparation of the natural nail are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply, shape and blend artificial tips. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tips are selected to fit the "C" curve of the natural nail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tips are applied with correct adhesive and should fit from "side to side". 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Nail tips that are appropriate to the size and shape of the clients natural nails are used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tips are cut and shaped according to client's preference. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tips are blended to a natural colour without any lines, milky shadows or over buffed according to company's safety and hygienic requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply the sculpting form.

    A complete set of nails should be used and no mixing and matching of products should occur.

    The form is applied correctly without any seepage or exposure to skin. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The form is applied to follow the natural shape of the nail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The forms are applied and customised to ensure a straight fit. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply gel nail enhancement according to client's needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The manufacturer's instructions for product use and application is followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Application techniques are adapted to meet the client's nail shape and condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The nail shape and length complements the client's nails and hands. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The manufacturer's instruction for product use and application are followed closely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The application techniques are managed so that it leaves a free margin around the cuticles and sidewall area of the nail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The finished surface of the nail is balanced with a smooth, even finish and an even clear defined small line. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Complete the client's record card and advise client on homecare treatments, retail products and time schedule for follow up appointment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Service is conducted according to organisation's hygiene standards.

    Fill and removal of gel nail enhancements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The condition of the natural nail and enhancement and structure is accurately identified and the information on the client record card is updated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Problems are identified and correctly rectified using the correction method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The maintenance techniques to restore the enhancement structures to its original conditions is used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    When the enhancement is removed, the natural nail should be undamaged and free from traces of product.
