PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to carry out phlebotomy related tasks effectively by applying the relevant knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
They will also be able to progress to learning skills such as the collection of blood, body fluid and tissue samples for pathology or blood transfusion purposes. This will enable qualifying learners to fulfil their role in the phlebotomy field thus enhancing health care delivery and economic transformation.

Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Perform phlebotomy related tasks efficiently by using the knowledge gained through the study of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology related to phlebotomy
  • Understand instructions containing practice-specific / medical terminology and respond appropriately
  • Use the correct terminology when communicating orally and in writing with patient/clients, co-workers and health care professionals
