PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are involved in activities that concern return on investment, the investment in people and the management of risk including. Learners include Skills Development Facilitators, Supervisors, Team Leaders, Line Managers, People involved in Human Resource management and Trainers. The term business unit in this Unit Standard implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining basic Return on Investment (ROI) theory and models.
  • Applying techniques to collect and analyse data.
  • Developing a plan to improve the financial effectiveness of a business unit.
  • Presenting a business case to justify the investment and resources. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this Unit Standard. Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical and Financial Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is sound principles of financial management and corporate governance.
  • Other models of financial measurement include cost benefit analysis, pay back period, internal rate of return and net present value.
  • The critical success factors of a plan could include, but are not limited to, returns in respect of learning transfer, performance on the job, competitive advantage, skills gaps, improved profit per employee, bottom line improvement, anticipated results, return in respect of financial benefits, management of resources, customer impact, impact on profitability through productivity.
  • The comprehensive report should include, but is not limited to, findings, interpretation, recommendations, motivation for implementation and anticipated benefits.
  • Accountability in corporate governance refers to the recommendations of the King II report as at May 2003. It would refer to whatever commission, regulations or codes subsequently replace the King II recommendations.

    3. ROI and another model of financial measurement related to ROI are investigated and explained and an indication is given of the relationship between the two models.

    4. The role of ROI in corporate governance is explained with reference to accountability and the management of risk.

    4. A strategy for implementing the plan is proposed for a specific business unit and an indication is given of the critical success factors of the plan.

    5. A cost benefit analysis is presented to justify the proposed plan.

    3. Issues that could provoke debate are identified, questions relating to the business case are anticipated and appropriate responses are prepared that respond to anticipated criticism. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Techniques for influencing the direction of a discussion or for dealing with areas of potential of conflict in a presentation are demonstrated for two what if scenarios. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA , or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
