PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to join materials to produce uppers by hand or by using a range of machines and equipment through joining materials to produce closed uppers using a range of machinery and equipment, performing operations by hand, identifying and selecting machines and equipment for joining materials and selecting and preparing consumables. Learners will also be able to apply work instructions and place patterns. Learners involved in closing will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification and will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Learners will also communicate verbally and in writing at ABET Level 4.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The functions of the relevant machines are clearly understood as specified by the manufacturer and enterprise standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Machines and equipment are identified and appropriately selected for joining materials to produce closed uppers in accordance with standard operating procedures and job cards.

    Selecting and preparing consumables for joining materials to produce closed uppers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Consumable specifications are identified and their purpose is clearly understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Appropriate consumables are selected using job cards and standard operating procedures in preparation for joining materials to produce closed uppers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All consumables used in the production of these uppers are presented as required to complete the uppers and according to standard operating procedures.

    Applying work instructions to join materials to produce closed uppers.

    1. Work instructions and specifications are applied where materials are joined to produce closed uppers.

    2. Instructions on job cards are followed sequentially so that defects are avoided at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Shortfalls are recorded and reported to the appropriate person applying standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Two pairs of closed uppers are produced including 1 x folded and 1 x bound topline using appropriate machinery safely according to manufacturers specifications and Standard Operating Procedures.

    Placing patterns to a process to produce closed uppers.

    1. Pattern specifications are identified and applied to the relevant closed upper process.

    2. Patterns are prepared and placed to a process applying standard operating procedures in order to produce closed uppers.

    The relevant Sector Education and Training Authority or Education and Training Quality Assurance Body will carry our accreditation of learning against this standard. Assessment will be conducted by registered assessors.
