PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to support and assist senior development practitioners in advocacy campaigns and workshops in one particular area of specialization. The learner will perform the tasks under supervision.

The learner will also be able to contribute to training programmes in development practice such as Training for Transformation [TFT], Participatory Action Research Programmes; local South African development programmes and various capacity building programmes. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A learner studying towards this unit standard is assumed to have the ability to communicate orally and in writing in their language of choice as well as that of the community i.e. they must be functionally literate.

A learner is assumed to be familiar with the specialisation of the learning area and have completed the following unit standards:
  • Understand the foundations of development practice and
  • Support the facilitation of learning in development practice at NQF Level 1. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Development practice projects shall include community or group-learning events that address selected and identified problems.
  • The learner will assist with the facilitation of a selected community or group-learning event in one specialised field or learning area.
  • Methods of advocating and conducting workshops should be appropriate to the field of specialisation.
  • The single learning event could be a one-to-one event, a small group workshop or a workshop for up to 20 people.
  • A supervisor or mentor will facilitate the discussions.

    Understand and use ONE specialised field of knowledge for advocacy campaigns.

    2. Simple advocacy skills and methods derived from the specialised field are demonstrated through discussion and debate. This should include conditions that may change and require active adaptation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Application of knowledge in the advocacy campaign is evaluated in accordance with set of procedures used during the campaign. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Understand and use ONE specialised field of knowledge for workshops.

    2. Simple workshop skills and methods derived from the body of specialised knowledge are demonstrated through discussions and debate. This should include conditions that may change and require active engagement and involvement.

    3. The conducting of workshops is evaluated in accordance with a set of procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare and use banners, pamphlets, posters and placards for advocacy campaigns.

    1. Pamphlets, posters, placards and banners are prepared in accordance with a clear set of instructions, contexts and outcomes of the advocacy campaign.

    2. Selected campaign materials are adapted to accommodate the needs of participants in the project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All relevant campaign materials are displayed and appropriately distributed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Prepare the learning environment for workshops.

    1. The learning environment is set up in accordance with a set of clear instructions regarding layout and arrangements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. All relevant information for display is discussed and practically demonstrated.

    Examples include agendas, outcomes and posters.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Room arrangement for plenary as well as group work is organised and described.

    Facilitate relevant sections of a workshop with appropriate learning materials.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accredited providers may establish or refine moderation procedures and systems in line with the requirements of the relevant ETQA.

    An external moderator may moderate the results of learners. External moderators should provide reports not only on the fairness and consistency of assessment, but also on the validity of the assessment design in terms of the specified outcomes.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Anyone assessing learners against this unit standard could be employed as a development practitioner in the same provider institution with at least a level 4 Qualification and work with a registered assessor in development practice with the relevant ETQA.

    Registered Assessors must have a level 4 qualification in development practice and prior or concurrent experience as a development practitioner.
