  • Understand and apply manufacturing principles and technologies.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The scope and context of this unit standard is to ensure the manufacturing of quality products within a changing technology environment and by improving and maintaining existing technology cost effectively.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Analyse a manufacturing plant design, maintenance and product technology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. The current and improved product and packaging technology used in the particular manufacturing environment are identified and operating principles are analysed according to product and technology principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The manufacturing plant design and manufacturing output are analysed using manufacturing design and output analysis.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Manufacturing plant design and manufacturing output refer to production block flow diagrams, layout and process flow diagrams, mass balance, capacity, raw material, packaging and output balances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Plant maintenance schedules are analysed according to output criteria.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Output criteria refer to capacity of equipment in the plant, operator capacity, maintenance schedules and improvement projections.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. The quality of products are analysed according to quality control principles, out put balances and technology principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. The effect and impact of defective equipment and faulty plant design are identified and explained according to quality, cost customer and safety criteria.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Manage and control improvements projects for plant design, maintenance and product technology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Plant technology, equipment output and resources used in the manufacturing operating plant and lines are analysed regarding improvement principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Total preventative maintenance systems are developed according to quality maintenance strategy principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Plant design and maintenance are managed according to manufacturing and packaging principles and criteria.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Maintenance and improvement analyses are done according to corrective and preventative maintenance principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. The cost of maintenance and improvements are calculated against cost of total quality.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
    6. Documentation relating to directing the project is complete, concise and in the required format and location.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Review improvement plan effectiveness.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Actual project outcomes are evaluated, reviewed for achievement and compared against current work plan, objectives and resources with variances against plan being identified.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Identified variances against plan are recorded and reasons for discrepancy are found and analysed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Identified strengths and weaknesses in the project or project plan and suggestions for their improvement are disseminated to the appropriate individuals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Project report and review records are complete, concise and in the required format and location.
