PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who work in the DC System sector of the engineering industry.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Plan and prepare to maintain, inspect and clean, repair, replace and rectify defects, recommission and complete work on an AC or DC drive unit.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare to maintain an AC or DC drive unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Authorisation is obtained according to the plant permit system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Documentation is obtained to carry out work. Manuals, drawings and work orders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All materials required for maintenance are selected and obtained according to worksite procedure. Blower, extension, feather duster, rags and paintbrush. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Test equipment is selected, checked for functionality and collected according to worksite procedure. Multimeter, oscilloscope, clip-on ammeter, recorders and test leads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. All spares and tools required for the task are selected and collected according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect and clean an AC or DC drive unit.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Printed circuit boards are inspected for cleanliness, faulty components and functionality and defects are recorded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Transformers, chokes and capacitors are inspected for defects and defects are recorded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Drive conductors and terminations are inspected for hot and loose connections, discoloured connections and defects are recorded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Cubicles are inspected to be clean, dust free and in a mechanical sound condition, and defects are recorded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Drive is inspected for sustainable alarm conditions and defects are recorded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Personal protective equipment is used throughout inspecting, cleaning and repairs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Cubicle is cleaned according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    8. Instruments and isolators are inspected and defects are recorded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    9. Semiconductors and heatsinks are inspected, cleaned and defects are recorded. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Repair, replace and rectify defects on an AC or DC drive.

    1. All faulty components are identified by using fault finding techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Identified faulty components are removed and replaced with correct specification components in line with manufacturer's and safety standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Modules are calibrated according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Drive is tested for correct operation using manufacturer's specifications or worksite procedures, and abnormalities are reported to designated personnel.

    5. Faulty settings are rectified using worksite procedures.

    6. Knowledge of components, printed circuit board handling, fault finding techniques, operation and work safety are demonstrated.

    1. Drive unit is inspected to be according to drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. All settings and alarms are verified according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Drive operation and functionality are tested for correct operation using manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Documentation is completed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Abnormalities and defects are reported as per worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Knowledge of installations, drawings, power electronic principles and safety are demonstrated. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
