| INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| Wisconsin University in the United States of America (USA) offers a Master in Public Health (MPH). The MPH qualification provides inter-professional education and training in public health concepts targeted at working health professionals and traditional students. It provides a practice-oriented programme for students in all of the health professions who want to strengthen general knowledge and skills in public health. There are six core courses that must be completed as part of the MPH Program. Five of the courses address the five core areas of knowledge basic to public health. The sixth required course provides an overview of the core functions of public health and introduces the students to cross-cutting competencies such as public health communication, diversity and culture, leadership, programme planning, and systems thinking. There is also a compulsory research component.
This Masters' Degree was aligned with the above-mentioned Wisconsin University Degree, but tailored for South African legislation and conditions. The Master of Public Health offered by the University of Essex in the United Kingdom (UK) provides students with a systematic and critical understanding of the key concepts underlying public health. It is aligned with the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework the UK. It contains independent research culminating in a dissertation. Conclusion: The qualification is similar to the two qualifications mentioned above. It contains similar content and a research component, while addressing South African needs. |
