Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Psychology will enable learners to:
  • Undertake advanced research.
  • Contribute to the theory and practice in the field of Industrial Psychology.
  • Develop individual development, understanding and practice in the field/discipline.

    Learners are expected to:
  • Conceptualise, implement and debate issues in the field.
  • Apply methods and research techniques to investigate issues in this field of study, thereby generating knowledge and theory relevant to the area of study.
  • Produce independent research of international standard in the form of a thesis/dissertation for examination.

    Rationale:
    Learners in the field of Industrial Psychology will be able to progress from Master's level to Doctoral level at the University of Fort Hare.

    The qualification focuses on the researching phenomena that deal with the optimum utilisation of human resources in the work environment (nationally and internationally). The graduates from the qualification would be able to address the current business-related human resources issues and trends as well as anticipate future scenarios and develop appropriate solutions.

    This qualification will produce graduates with capabilities and competencies that are of particular relevance, in transforming from a historically rural and under-developed environment, is faced with several challenges relating to the workplace and changing relationships within the organisation.

    The qualification provides an opportunity for learners to pursue knowledge creatively and to devise original solutions to specific problems and situations, contributing to their chosen area of expertise within the field of Industrial Psychology. It provides the highest possible academic qualification for those who wish to work in Industrial Psychology-related fields, e.g., Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations and Consumer Behaviour/Marketing. It will thus provide the region and the country with expertise that is both necessary and in short supply, while also producing graduates who will pursue academic careers. In turn, it will provide higher education institutions with much-needed expertise in research and academic knowledge. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    This qualification allows for Recognition of Prior Learning for a leaner to attain entry/access to this qualification and to gain exemptions from some qualification requirements. Where an entry criterion applies, a prospective leaner may use prior learning experience in the field of public health to gain entry to the qualification. Submission of a portfolio of evidence as proof of practical experience from an appropriate setting will enable the learner admission to the qualification. Access to the qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning is possible if the learner produces evidence of having achieved the appropriate outcomes level of knowledge, skill, and competence. Access to the qualification is achievable if the learner can provide formal proof of credits earned towards the outcomes from an accredited service provider.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Master of Philosophy in Industrial Psychology NQF Level 9.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification consists of compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 10 totalling 360 Credits:
  • Thesis, 360 Credits. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Motivate, plan and conduct research according to an accepted research proposal.
    2. Analyse, evaluate, interpret and argue findings.
    3. Present the research findings and recommendations in the required manner. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Collate information from a wide range of sources.
  • Compile and present a research proposal.
  • Identify problems and undertake solutions.
  • Conduct research ethically and according to relevant methodology.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Use computer technology to assist in analysing, interpreting and presenting findings.
  • Demonstrate arguments are well-structured, analytical and original.
  • Ensure content shows original thinking and disciplined application to current practices.
  • Analyse and evaluate conflicting results carefully.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
  • Confirm the ability to perform as a leader in the field in the manner and content of the presentation.
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of cultural and ethical issues clearly.
  • Ensure presentation contributes towards improvement and changes in current public administration practices.
  • Ensure the thesis complies with academic requirements.

    Integrated Assessment:
    During the research, the learner will be expected to present papers on topics related to the study. Feedback will be obtained from peers and the supervisor, thereby constituting formative assessment.

    Summative assessment is through an examination of the thesis submitted by the learner. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification is comparable to Doctoral qualifications in the United Kingdom. Similarly, the UK's qualification involves:
  • writing a research proposal that encapsulates the problem or hypothesis that is investigated,
  • Conducting and reporting on research and presenting findings of the study through the submission of a thesis or dissertation to internal and external assessors.

    This qualification allows possibilities for horizontal articulation.
