Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Learners obtaining this qualification will be able to contribute to the improvement and development of the functions and operations of some specialised area(s) of the Tourism and Hospitality industry, as well as to demonstrate a high level of overall knowledge in such specialised area(s), ranging from fundamental concepts to advanced theoretical or applied knowledge. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Upon entry to the Master's Degree programme, it is assumed that learners should have demonstrated:
  • An understanding of the scope and nature of the tourism and hospitality industry.
  • The ability to perform effectively in one or more sectors of the industry.
  • Competence in effective planning, execution and assessment of operational practices and strategies.
  • Familiarity with macro development planning issues and strategies.
  • The ability to conduct elementary research, synthesise and report findings, and make recommendations.

    Entry Requirements:
  • Bachelor Honours Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Level 8.
    Or
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Level 8.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Level 8.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1. Assess skills, knowledge and insight into theoretical frameworks and management strategies in the hospitality industry.
    2. Compare and critically analyse the rationale for the selection and implementation of particular practices and strategies in a sector(s) of the industry.
    3. Design/develop a research proposal on an approved research topic.
    4. A thesis demonstrating that appropriate, relevant research methodology has effectively been applied is completed and the findings are analysed leading to meaningful recommendations.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The learner's competence will be assessed by means of a proposal and thesis that demonstrate:
  • An understanding of the theoretical frameworks as well as the practices and strategies in industry.
  • The ability to critically analyse industry practices and strategies.
  • The insight to identify areas that need improvement or development.
  • Familiarity with various research methodologies utilised in the industry.
  • The skill to apply appropriate methodology.
  • The ability to compile and analyse findings in order to make constructive recommendations.

    The learner's ability to articulate the process as well as the findings and recommendations will be assessed by means of a comprehensive oral defence of the thesis.

    The written thesis and comprehensive oral defence will demonstrate that all the capabilities have been integrated.
