| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| This qualification is intended for those who want to pursue research in sciences, including but not limited to Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences. This qualification will make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge in Medical Laboratory Sciences and other scientific disciplines, and will advance the profession of Biomedical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists. This qualification will also equip the Medical Laboratory Scientist for a teaching/educational role in specific specialisation areas.
The research problem, its justification, process and outcome is reported in a dissertation, which complies with the generally accepted norms for research at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 9. The candidate must be able to demonstrate mastery of the research, critically analysing the results and presenting it in relation to the literature of the topic. The research topic does not have to be novel work (as required by Doctoral Studies), but should be presented in such a way that it contributes to the existing body of knowledge in Sciences, by clarifying concepts, applying systems and processes, and critiquing or interpreting existing knowledge. Rationale: Qualifying learners will come from related scientific fields and related health professions including Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences. This qualification will produce a Graduate who will contribute to technological innovations in science and health related disciplines (including Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences). This qualification will meet the demands of suitably qualified researchers and educators in various scientific fields and health related disciplines. The qualifying learner will be able to conduct independent research under minimal guidance in a chosen field, and contribute to knowledge production in that field. The learner will have the opportunity to collaborate with national and/or international professionals in the chosen field of study. The learner will be able to advance own knowledge and skills and be equipped for advanced and/or specialised employment in various scientific fields, the academe and in Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences (if they have the correct credentials). This qualification is offered on a part-time of full-time basis. |
