The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification is intended for those who want to pursue research in sciences, including but not limited to Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences. This qualification will make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge in Medical Laboratory Sciences and other scientific disciplines, and will advance the profession of Biomedical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists. This qualification will also equip the Medical Laboratory Scientist for a teaching/educational role in specific specialisation areas.
The research problem, its justification, process and outcome is reported in a dissertation, which complies with the generally accepted norms for research at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 9. The candidate must be able to demonstrate mastery of the research, critically analysing the results and presenting it in relation to the literature of the topic. The research topic does not have to be novel work (as required by Doctoral Studies), but should be presented in such a way that it contributes to the existing body of knowledge in Sciences, by clarifying concepts, applying systems and processes, and critiquing or interpreting existing knowledge.

Rationale:
Qualifying learners will come from related scientific fields and related health professions including Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences. This qualification will produce a Graduate who will contribute to technological innovations in science and health related disciplines (including Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences). This qualification will meet the demands of suitably qualified researchers and educators in various scientific fields and health related disciplines.

The qualifying learner will be able to conduct independent research under minimal guidance in a chosen field, and contribute to knowledge production in that field. The learner will have the opportunity to collaborate with national and/or international professionals in the chosen field of study. The learner will be able to advance own knowledge and skills and be equipped for advanced and/or specialised employment in various scientific fields, the academe and in Biomedical Technology and Medical Laboratory Sciences (if they have the correct credentials). This qualification is offered on a part-time of full-time basis.

    Entry Requirements.
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor Honours Degree.
    OR
  • A relevant Postgraduate Diploma.
    OR
  • A relevant Bachelor's Degree at Level 8 may also be recognised as meeting the minimum entry requirement to a cognate Master's Degree programme.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    These is a dissertation qualification consists of the following compulsory modules at Level 9 totalling 180 Credits:
  • Analysis and critical evaluation of the literature relevant to the field/area of investigation, 30 Credits.
  • Application of appropriate research methods and techniques independently and effectively in the research process to solve complex problems, 75 Credits.
  • Report findings in an appropriate format, 75 Credits. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    Integration of new and existing knowledge in the field/area of investigating through the application of appropriate research methods and techniques and presenting research findings to professional audiences. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • A comprehensive literature base is critically analysed and evaluated to establish recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the chosen field.
  • Models, principles, theories, techniques and methodologies in the chosen field are analysed, explained, and used correctly in oral presentations and the dissertation.
  • The research problem is clearly identified, defined and detailed in the research proposal where the stated hypothesis directs the investigation.
  • The appropriate methods and techniques are selected and applied in the collection of qualitative and quantitative data where appropriate.
  • Experimental research is responsibly and ethically conducted.
  • Logical interpretation of data reflects clear understanding of the relationship between facts in the study and the ability to evaluate contradictory information.
  • The inferences, interpretation and conclusions based on critical review of evidence from measurements and statistical analyses are valid.
  • Information sources are used correctly and appropriately.
  • Information technology is applied effectively in the production of the dissertation/research report.
  • Language and numeracy skills are applied effectively and correctly in clearly communicating the research problem, its investigation, the outcome, and the recommendations.

    This qualification relates to the Master of Medical Laboratory Science (MMLSc) as offered by University of Otago, New Zealand.

    This qualification allows possibilities for both vertical and horizontal articulation.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Doctor of Health Sciences in Biomedical Technology, Level 10.
