Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
  • Developing specialised/scientific knowledge of a selected aspect of architectural, environmental or related field of design through a Postgraduate programme of individual, supervised research and demonstrating competence in documenting the research in accordance with pre-requisite, internationally accepted standards of excellence.
  • Admission to the degree DArch or PhD. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    Learners can apply for RPL and submit a record of all prior learning together with a portfolio of design work that has been completed during her/his time in practice. The complete portfolio would be submitted to the Department of Architecture with the application and presented by the student at a portfolio review. This presentation, in person or through digital communication media (skype), would be reviewed and evaluated by an evaluation committee (review panel). The panel would be constituted of a minimum 3 members; made up of experienced architectural academics (one of whom would be external to the Department of Architecture. Work considered by the panel to meet the requirements for access to the NQF Level 9 M.Arch (Professional) qualification, would enable access for the applicant.

  • Compiling appropriate research reports, treatises and dissertations. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Research proposals for the dissertation require approval by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Economic Sciences prior to finalisation of a learner's registration procedures.

    The study supervisor/s, one or more examiners and moderators are appointed by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Economic Sciences.

    Continuous supervision and evaluation by the supervisor/mentor, of submissions leading to completion of a dissertation and fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
  • Learners with corresponding credits for specific outcomes obtained at other tertiary institutions may, on application, transfer such credits to this degree.
  • Articulation is possible for learners between UPE and other universities offering post-graduate studies in architecture and other appropriate or related fields.
  • Learners may be required to register for conversion courses (where competencies and credits differ amongst tertiary institutions).
