PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • Firstly, it provides the opportunity for recent graduates, primarily those who have not majored in Management, to secure employment and enhance their career opportunities by supplementing their undergraduate qualifications with a programme that provides a broad exposure to management principles and practices at the postgraduate level. In particular, women graduates who have chosen their under-graduate major based on traditional 'female career options' can make the transition at graduate level to a field historically dominated by men.
  • Secondly, employed graduates and national diplomats may use the programme to enhance their opportunities for promotion into managerial positions by completing the programme on a full or part-time basis. This programme will be of particular value to black women in these positions as they are often overlooked for career development opportunities if they do not have formal qualifications in management.
  • Thirdly, experienced managers who do not have a formal university qualification, but have the potential to complete graduate level studies (with ten years work experience with some at a managerial or supervisory level), could also enrol. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    To enter the programme applicants need to demonstrate:

    1. the comprehension, analytical and critical reasoning ability necessary to successfully complete graduate level studies in the field of management.

    2. basic numerical skills which can serve as a foundation for further development of more quantitative analytical skills.

    Three categories of applicant are considered:

    * graduates, from any discipline, who have developed the ability to transfer these skills into the management domain

    * national diplomats from any discipline who have some work experience after completing their qualification

    * experienced employees who have had extensive work experience at a administrative, professional or managerial level and who have at least attained a grade 12 certificate.

    Recognition of prior learning:

    All applicants will be required to write an admission evaluation which assesses their competencies/prior learning in the following areas:
  • numeric
  • analytical and critical reasoning
  • short writing exercise

    Applicants also submit a comprehensive application form that is used to assess the broader range of experience and skills that the candidate has. This application package includes:
  • post-school academic record at tertiary institutions
  • statement of purpose - particular emphasis placed on ability to communicate coherently
  • partially structured referee reports from employers and lecturers familiar with the applicant
  • evidence of leadership experience and community participation
  • detailed record of their employment experience.

    Where employment experience is part of the admission requirements, we would seek evidence of two years' appropriate experience after graduation in the case of diplomats and graduates. In the case of applicants who only have a matriculation exemption and do not have a university degree, we require ten years of experience, some of which should be in a professional or managerial capacity.

    Learners should be able to:

    1. Demonstrate general knowledge of the field of Management with the opportunity to acquire greater breadth of knowledge of cognate functional areas or depth in a chosen area of specialisation (e.g. Marketing, Finance or Human Resource Management).

    2. Able to identify and solve management problems using some judgement across a range of functional areas.

    3. Able to organise oneself and work effectively with others as a team tackling business research projects, case studies and assignments.

    4. Able to collect, analyse, organise theoretical and practical information across a range of functional areas of management, and critically evaluate information if an area of specialisation is selected.

    5. Communicate effectively, using technology and language skills in oral and written presentation.

    6. Use basic desktop computer tools effectively to solve management problems.

    7. Demonstrate an understanding of the organisation as a set of related functions by applying holistic approaches to strategic business problems. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1. Greater breadth of knowledge of the field of Management is demonstrated in projects and programmes produced.
    2. Management problems are identified and solved with judgments across a range of functional areas.
    3. Business research projects, case studies and assignments reflect teamwork in an effective and organised way.
    4. Theoretical and practical information across a range of functional areas of management is collected, analysed, organised and critically evaluated in the form of reports and projects.
    5. Language skills in oral and written presentation are demonstrated as effective communication skills and the ability to use OHPs.
    6. Basic desktop computer tools are used to solve management problems effectively.
    7. Holistic approaches are used to solve strategic business problems

    All modules in the Department will be evaluated on a continuous assessment basis. Formative assessment consists of various kinds of individual and group assignments, presentations, case studies, role plays and simulations, research essays provided for feedback and mentoring. Summative assessment is by formal examination. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The ADM is purposely designed as a conversation programme for students migrating from other disciplines to graduate studies in Management. Students will be able to further their studies beyond the ADM in a number of ways.

    1. A student with a strong academic record, who transfers credits prior to being awarded the ADM, may be able to transfer all credits towards the B.Com (Hons) degree (with Foundation Modules), depending on the stream selected. Because of the integrated modular structure of the two qualifications the student would then only be required to complete a reduced number of credits (at least 70) to earn the B.Com (Hons) degree.

    2. If the student is awarded the ADM prior to enrolling for the Honours degree, she/he would be able to progress to the B.Com (Hons) in Management by completing the 120 credits required for that degree. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderation of the course in the final years, and assessment of students' progress will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department from other tertiary institutions on an annual basis and approved by Senate. Internal moderation will occur through the Department. The moderation body is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor must at least have an Honours or a Master's degree and at least two to five years' experience in the particular field of Management.
