PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in general and specific areas of Soil Science that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society

The second purpose is to provide the Agricultural industry in South Africa, which underpins all aspects of the economy, with significant numbers of graduate with the high levels of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in Agriculture Extension and related sciences necessary for the identification and strategic solution of real-life problems facing the agricultural industry.
Such graduates are especially needed to support emerging farmers in the small-scale agricultural sector

The successful Ph.D. candidate would have proven himself as a researcher capable of a original research of a high calibre, thus greatly enhancing his/her capacity to play a leading role in Agriculture and related fields 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Every candidate at this level of study is assessed on the merits of his/her specific case and guided by the regulations (regarding admissions) of the Faculty and of the University in place at any one time

Generally speaking, the prerequisite for acceptable into a research programme leading to the award of Ph.D in agriculture extension will be a Masters degree in agriculture extension, or related sciences, achieved at an acceptable level and providing an adequate academic and research background for the more demanding Ph.D. research programme

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
1.
  • Write research proposals that indicate that learners are able to identify a problem or problems in soil science and formulate research problems
  • -Formulate and test hypotheses
  • Select and utilize research instruments that are relevant in the research problems
  • Conduct fieldwork during the actual investigation if relevant to the research project
  • Report the findings of the investigation and formulate recommendations that emanate from the findings

  • Identify and analyze different scientific procedures in terms of the problem being researched

  • Critically read, interpret and analyze literature from different authors on the topic being researched

  • Write a thesis that is linguistically correct and of an acceptable standard

    Integrated assessment procedures to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

    Assessment will usually be solely in the form of an acceptable thesis but may possibly also involve an oral defense thereof and/or publishing in approved/NATED scientific publications. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Exceptionally, a candidate for the M.Sc.Agric (soil science) degree who has performed exceptionally well in his/her research, upon the recommendation of the assessors may be urged to upgrade his/her programme to that of a Ph.D programme without first obtaining the M.Sc Agric qualification

    The only further qualification a successful Ph.D candidate would aspire to would be another Ph.D in the same or related field or the Doctor of Science in Agriculture, or a related field, a qualification awarded under exceptional circumstances for an outstanding contribution made to agriculture or a related field over the span of one's career. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    One of the moderators/examiners would be expected to be from an academic institution outside South Africa. He/she would be an expert in the field of the research project and would have a Ph.D. He/She would have to be approved by the Senate 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Both internal and external promoters/co-promoters (if appointed)/assessors would be experts in their fields and in that of the candidate's research and would be expected to have a PhD qualification and adequate academic and research experience
