PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to equip senior and middle level agricultural extension and development staff with skills, which should enable them to carry out their role in uplifting agriculture, particularly in the developing areas of Southern Africa, more efficiently and effectively. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
1. A valid school-leaving certificate or equivalent FET 4 examination in any combination of subjects, and have at least two years' relevant experience approved by the University

2. An Agriculture Diploma from a recognised Agricultural College.

The learner will be able to:

1. Recognise and/or deal with the present day problems in the various broad fields of agricultural extension and rural development, particularly in the developing areas of South Africa.

2. Demonstrate an awareness of, and the ability to cope with the challenges of middle management positions in the private sector or a government department of agriculture extension

3. Interact with confidence as a member of a team or group in a variety of discussion and problem-solving situations in practical farming to assist small-scale farmers

4. Identify and define problems encountered in crop and/or livestock production systems, and to use appropriate methodology to devise creative problems-solving strategies (for example, the use of draught animal power) suitable for adoption by farmers, but by small-scale farmers in particular.

The learner will be able to:

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

    Through integrated assessment the learner will be required to demonstrate applied competence using a range of formative and summative assessment methods including assignments, seminars, practical reports and exams. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Learners who successfully complete this diploma could apply to register for (a) a diploma at an agricultural college (if he/she does not already have one) or (b) for a B.Agric. or even a B.Sc Agric. degree, depending on the courses for which they would be credited if, in the interim period, they have completed courses which would qualify them to apply for such registration. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Second examiners are used. External assessors with qualifications as above (for 10) are chosen from sister institutions or from recognised research bodies and are qualified in the appropriate area of study. They have to be approved by the Senate. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    All assessors are experts in their disciplines and the modules they teach/assess. Academic staff should have at least a Master's degree. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
