PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The Bachelor of Business Administration seeks to develop skills for professionals and equip them to enhance business performance through being effective business administrators with a deep sense of the business, what it consists of and how it operates. Ever-increasing demands on businesses for excellence require the types of business practitioners that can provide a robust internal business environment that will allow businesses to be responsive to market- and other external needs to deliver top quality products and services. The purpose of the qualification is to provide an all-around well-developed, entrepreneurial business administrator that can support management, manage operations at the executive level and view the business from a fresh and original perspective. Business Administration, as a result, forms the core of the qualification to provide learners with the generic business skills to support the management of the other business areas.

Rationale:
This qualification was developed based on the identification of the need for a business degree focusing on the development of business administration knowledge, skills and aptitudes, with the business being the focus of study as opposed to a business management degree that develops learners' abilities to manage a business. This qualification aims to enhance learners' understanding of the business itself.

The qualification meets requirements from the sector to enhance the anticipated development of the impact that digital transformation, industrial revolutions, disruptive technology, artificial intelligence and the internet of things may have on business processes.

Learners that are typically expected to benefit from this qualification would be those who are interested in taking up a management support role and executing management at the administrative, operational and practitioner level and seek to pursue a career pathway into Postgraduate studies. The qualification therefore will play a pivotal role in upskilling practitioners with a solid understanding of how a business operates.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
The qualification compares favourably with the following international qualifications:

    Country: Australia
    Institution: Flinders University
    Qualification Title: Bachelor of Business
The Australian qualification is on the AQF Level 7. If considering that the AQF also has 10 levels this presents a good degree of similarity in terms of cognitive level.
"The Bachelor of Business qualifies learners who apply a broad and coherent body of knowledge in a range of contexts to undertake professional work and as a pathway for further learning" and the volume of learning is typically 3 - 4 years. The primary purpose of both qualifications is to provide a well-rounded, broad education that equips learners with the knowledge base, theory and methodology of disciplines and fields of study, and to enable them to demonstrate initiative and responsibility in an academic or professional context.
A comparative study, therefore, was relatively easy, and it was found that the South African qualification compares best with the Flinders University Bachelor of Business.
This qualification's purpose is described as teaching learners to understand the world of business and providing them with the foundation skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a successful career in business.

The Bachelor of Business offers specialisations in innovation and enterprise, human resource management, international business, management, and marketing and modules are arranged around the following topics: accounting for managers, law for business, economics for business, quantitative methods, and innovative and creative thinking. This corresponds well with the purpose of the South African qualification described as follows: The qualification seeks to develop skills for professionals and equip them to enhance business performance through being effective business administrators with a deep sense of the business, what it consists of and how it operates. The qualification's purpose is therefore to provide an all-around well-developed, entrepreneurial business administrator that can support management, manage operations at the executive level and view the business from a fresh and original perspective. Both qualifications stretch over three years with access into an honours qualification upon successful completion.

    Country: Scotland
    Institution: University of Wisconsin-Madison
Qualification Title: Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
The South African qualification was found to compare best with the BBA degree that offers a multitude of streams, inclusive of supply chain management, operations and technology management, management and human resources, risk management, and international business - all areas covered by the South African qualification.
Below is an extract of the University of Wisconsin-Madison outcomes that compare favourably with the new qualification:
  • Understand how to analyse and evaluate business processes combined with a capability for improving those processes.
  • Understand how the effects of increased utilisation and variability impact process capacity and flow times, and will be able to suggest approaches to improve system performance.
  • Build analytical models to solve business problems.
  • Articulate the commonalities and differences between service and manufacturing processes and be able to manage and make improvements within either context.
  • Apply principles of supply chain management in business contexts.
  • Analyse and implement operational business decisions from both strategic and tactical perspectives.

The level of the outcomes of the Wisconsin University compares well with the cognitive requirements of the South African qualification.
