PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose
The general purpose of the Advanced Diploma in Management is to prepare learners for Postgraduate study to undergo intensive, focused and applied specialisation which meets the requirements of management studies. The specific purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with a structured avenue to advance their knowledge in the management field. The qualification provides an opportunity for the development of advanced intellectual and practical knowledge allowing learners to become specialists and secure top management jobs.

The qualification also provides an opportunity for learners to deepen their knowledge and understanding of theories, methodologies and practices in management.

Furthermore, the qualification aims to:
  • Provide learners with in-depth knowledge, discipline, specific skills, and applied competence in the related industry, and opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, employment, and a meaningful contribution to society.
  • Empower learners to solve complex problems in a focused way to effectively manage and allocate resources, communicate effectively and contribute to socio-economic transformation responsibly and ethically.
  • Increase the number of graduates in leadership positions, and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is strengthened and diversified.

    Rationale:
    Effective management is required for an organisation to gain a competitive advantage and to succeed in contemporary economies. The responsibility of managers is to ensure that the various functions and processes of the organisation are operating efficiently and effectively. Managers need to understand and assess the effectiveness of the various functional areas of an organisation.

    This qualification will assist managers to understand the functions of the organisation and strategic decision-making processes at all management levels. This will assist managers in making strategic decisions to minimise risks in the organisation. A thorough understanding of the organisation and the interrelatedness of the functional areas will ensure the business is sustainable.

    Managers require a range of skills to successfully manage organisations and cope with competitors and external challenges. Managers also require various managerial skills to deal with their employees and ensure employees utilise their abilities to improve productivity and efficiency within the organisation. Therefore, the skills provided by furthering studies in management allows managers to improve their competitive advantage.

    The qualification is an ideal choice for aspiring managers to help them understand more about organisations and the reality associated with either starting or managing one. The qualification encompasses various aspects of management, namely technology, economics, human resources, accounting, and marketing. The qualification will also provide opportunities for learners to move forward in their careers and between the various sectors of the economy, and to enhance productivity and efficiency within their organisations. It is also suitable for continuing professional development, and for learners to upgrade their skills and knowledge base. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    This qualification may be obtained in whole or in part through the recognition of prior learning. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be provided following the institution's RPL policy. RPL for access will be applied in cases where a learner may not have the required entry requirements. In these cases, learning derived from work or life experience will be a major element in the profiles of learners through an examination of their curriculum vitae (CV).

    RPL for credit/ modules exemption:
  • Learners who can demonstrate experiential or work-based learning at an equivalent level may be through RPL granted credits towards the qualification.
  • Exemptions are granted for RPL when in the assessment of the institution selection committee, the learner's knowledge and skills correspond to the learning outcomes of the course or specific module for which credit is applied.

    RPL for advanced standing:
  • An applicant might have gained knowledge and/or experience in specific areas, when compared to the outcomes against this qualification that might cover some modules.
  • The applicant may apply for recognition of these modules.
  • Once the assessment is done, the institution might give recognition for specific modules, but not for the entire qualification.
  • There are guidelines governing the maximum number of modules for which advanced standing can be granted.
