PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the Diploma in Work Study is to develop graduates who can demonstrate focused knowledge and skills within the specialisation field. Learners will develop depth and specialisation of knowledge, together with practical skills through work integrated learning, to enable graduates to apply their learning in the workplace to increase productivity and enhance quality of work life.

The industry refers to Work Study as a generic term for those techniques which are used in all its contexts and which lead systematically to the examination of all the factors, which effect the efficiency and economy of the situation being reviewed to effect improvement. The focus will be on organisations' increased efficiency, better product quality, improvement of the working process, effective utilisation of resources, equipment requirements, and fair wages. The utilisation of the Work Study nomenclature would increase learner enrolment, have a positive impact within the field, as well as adding a socio-economic value. Learners who possess the Work Study qualification will certainly be identified and thus increasing their chances of employability as Work Study Practitioners, Business Analysts, and Value Chain Consultants in both the manufacturing and services industries.

The qualification focuses on improving organisational structures, processes, and work standards thus enhancing productivity, service delivery and quality of work life. It includes important business-related modules as well as systems analysis and development modules to ensure a balanced perspective of modern organisational environments to inform the environment within which the graduates must operate.

Qualifying learners will be able to analyse shortcomings in organisational structure, strategies, policies, processes, and suggest a range of intervention strategies and techniques to inform management to fulfil their roles as quality providers of services and products at the operational and tactical levels.

Rationale:
The lack of adequate management services skills in South Africa plays an important role in the high failure rate in service delivery. This qualification will provide a set of essential and significant competencies to support national efforts to equip prospective Work Study practitioners with the skills and capabilities to produce solutions for service delivery challenges.

The qualification focuses on improving organisational structures, processes, and work standards thus enhancing productivity, service delivery and quality of work life. It includes important business-related modules as well as systems analysis and development modules to ensure a balanced perspective of modern organisational environments to inform the environment within which the graduates must operate.

This qualification will help address the national skills shortage and graduates will be equipped to take up positions as:
  • Work Study Practitioners.
  • Managers (variety of positions).
  • Business Analysts.
  • Value Chain Consultants

    The majority national and provincial government departments and municipalities as well as private firms like banks, insurance companies etc. employ Work Study practitioners for, organisations' increased efficiency, better product quality, improvement of the working process, effective utilisation of resources, equipment requirements, and fair wages, amongst other related roles. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    The institution has an approved Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy which is applicable to equivalent qualifications for admission into the qualification. RPL will be applied to accommodate applicants who qualify. RPL thus provides alternative access and admission to qualifications, as well as advance standing within qualifications. RPL may be applied for access, credits from modules and credits for or towards the qualification.

    RPL for access:
  • Learners who do not meet the minimum entrance requirements or the required qualification at the same NQF level as the qualification required for admission may be considered for admission through RPL.
  • To be considered for admission in the qualification based on RPL, applicants should provide evidence in the form of a portfolio that demonstrates that they have acquired the relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies through formal, non-formal and/or informal learning to cope with the qualification expectations should they be allowed entrance into the qualification.

    RPL for exemption of modules:
  • Learners may apply for RPL to be exempted for modules that form part of the qualification. For a learner to be exempted from a module, the learner needs to provide sufficient evidence in the form of a portfolio that demonstrates that competency was achieved for the learning outcomes that are equivalent to the learning outcomes of the module.

    RPL for credit:
  • Learners may also apply for RPL for credit for or towards the qualification, in which they must provide evidence in the form of a portfolio that demonstrates prior learning through formal, non-formal and/or informal learning to obtain credits towards the qualification.
  • Credit shall be appropriate to the context in which it is awarded and accepted.

    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor's degree studies.

    The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be used in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Select appropriate technique(s) correctly and analyse a particular set of data.
  • Analyse quantitative results correctly and propose alternative solutions for sound decisions and evaluate different solutions.
  • Apply the cost calculations projected over varying time horizons and at varying rates correctly. Calculate and compare the costs of alternative solutions are correctly and interpret the cost figures correctly.
  • Execute the functional analysis of work correctly and demonstrate the principles of organising according to best practises.
  • Design work according to individual and group needs.
  • Describe and apply the systematic recording and investigation of work data correctly and execute the procedure and method studies in a scientific way.
  • Analyse work data and identify and develop improvements to ensure optimised work processes Identify, report the improved systems, and write proposals. Propose measures to maintain improved systems. Apply correctly, the relevant ergonomic measures to optimise the work environment. Evaluate and report on impact of improvements in terms of productivity and efficiency and where possible calculate in monetary terms.
  • Determine scientifically, the resources required for the execution of work by using relevant techniques.
  • Determine scientifically, information requirements for management control systems. Propose systems to ensure the implementation of sound systems for the efficient utilisation of resources.

    Formative Assessment:
    Learning and assessment are integrated. Continual formative assessment is done so that learners are given feedback on their progress in the achievement of learning outcomes. The scheme of work includes:
    Assignments based on the learning material and learners are given feedback. The process is continuous and focuses on smaller sections of the work and limited numbers of outcomes.

    Summative Assessment:
  • Summative assessment is concerned with the judgement of the learning in relation to the Exit Level Outcomes of the qualification. Such judgement includes Integrated Assessments which test the learner's ability to integrate the larger body of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are represented by the.
  • Exit Level Outcomes as a whole. Examinations, projects, laboratory reports or equivalent assessment such as a portfolio of evidence assess a representative selection of the outcomes practised and assessed in the formative stage. Summative assessment also tests the learner's ability to manage and integrate a large body of knowledge to achieve the stated outcomes of a module. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The curriculum was developed through a comparative analysis of the competency domain outlines of the administrative and services sector certification programmes, national skills standards and vocational Qualifications from the United Kingdom and South Africa. The curricula and skills standards from several academic institutions, and the topics covered in business related books, research and conference proceedings on productivity improvement were investigated.
